I have two functional hands! Well mostly functional, I'd say about 80% on the right but still that's 80% better than I did have and I'll take it. Since I can type again I'll share a couple of quick things. First the performance on Saturday was glitchy as hell but one of those that you afterwards say, "I survived it and now I'll be better prepared for next time." Suffice to say at one point I was either going to lose my anklet or my skirt and thankfully it was the former rather than the latter. Also there was an issue with the lights and the next performer jumping the gun. But we did it and we didn't embarrass ourselves too badly...we even got invited back for the next show in October.

Speaking of dance, I have two things to say about the new season of America's Best Dance Crew:

1. If there's another more addictive show on tv I don't want to know about it. Seriously.

2. I'm not allowed to bitch about how tough it is to dance with double veils again, why? 'Cause of Saltare, that's why-

Also god fucking dammit I'm going to pay money to see an M. Night Shyamalan movie even though I promised myself I wouldn't! But jesus god, you tell me how anyone can watch this trailer and not want to buy a ticket right now!

Particularly when they've recast Zuko (Dev Patel - someone who can actually act, wow!), even though his scar looks about as decorative as that on the movie Phantom of the Opera (i.e. bad sunburn level). If that hadn't sold me, the fact that the story and characters are so amazing that I don't think even M. Night can fuck this up and the costumes and effects look stunning, well the fact that The Daily Show's Aasif Mandvi is playing Commander Zhao would've. I'm not a hundred percent sold on Uncle Iroh as more badass than sweet and cuddly, and I'm seeing absolutely none of the humor that was such a fundamental element of the series...but I admitted to Aelf last night (after we'd gone through the trailer practically frame by frame) that I'm planning to do opening night in my Avatar costume.

Yeah, I'm thinking this one's going to call for full-metal fangirl.

Edit: Meant to mention it looks like the Fire nation is going to be cast almost entirely with Indian actors, Asians for Earth and white for Water/Air. Odd, but at least it's not just a sea of white kids so that's something. I am really going to miss Zuko's topknot but I'll admit it would look pretty absurd on Dev.
ebonlock: (Bollocks!)
Oh yeah, baby. I knew as soon as I heard M. Night was getting his grubby paws on Avatar, and then referred to it as his Star Wars, that we were going to have an atrocity of epic proportions. Some folks wanted to give him a chance, to adopt a wait and see attitude, but not me. No, I stubbornly held onto my cynicism because I knew deep down in my soul that yet again I was going to be proven right.

Check out the casting for the film. Notice something? It's like they were making this back in the goddamn 1930's, isn't it? You know, back when it was normal to cast white people as Asians. Seriously, I don't think you could make this cast any more painfully white if you actively tried.

Also, one of the kids from Twilight as Sokka...and JESSE MCCARTNEY as Zuko? OMG...

I wish I could be surprised about this, I really do.

*sigh*

Ok so this is my non-spoilery Avatar finale review. In a word: AWESOME.

Seriously, by the end I had tears of goddamn joy streaking down my cheeks. All I have to do is think of a few of the big moments from the episode and I'm in tears again. I felt a lot like I did at the end of Star Wars when I saw it in the theater the first time as a little girl.

I am completely and utterly satisfied by what appeared on my television screen. I can't even begin to tell you how infrequently that happens in my life. I mean after the whole Deathly Hallows atrocity I'd begun to wonder if I was ever going to enjoy a finale again. And then Aang and Team Avatar come along and restore my faith in storytelling again. Ms. Rowling, take note, this is how it's done.

Two quick things, I'm totally making Aang's costume from Part 4 of Sozin's Comet at some point and I'm wearing it to a con. That's just all there is to it. Second, I think I need to get the four nation symbols tattooed somewhere on my body, I just need to decide where.

If anybody hasn't seen this yet and wants to please ping me because I will happily watch the whole thing again...and again...and probably again...

Avatar Week has begun and I'm currently re-watching "The Western Air Temple" which is just as much fun as I remembered. Yes, this is me supporting Nick, even if they are run by a bunch of braindead ass-monkeys. Ok, so it might have at least a little to do with the fact that Nick is currently running some cool commercials for Sozin's Comet. And speaking of which, have you guys seen this yet? Holy crap:

I've already got chills just thinking about the finale on Saturday, and yeah it might have something to do with all the Zuko action in the commercial (and his total glamor shot, with the slow-mo and Bollywood-esque wind through the hair)...

No, seriously, DOOM:

The Last Airbender Will Be M. Night Shyamalan's Star Wars

M. Night Shyamalan has finished his script for The Last Airbender, the live action movie based on Nickelodeon's epic cartoon, Avatar — and he's told Paramount and Nickelodeon that he thought they had a new Star Wars on their hands. Shyamalan screened a rough teaser trailer at the New York Licensing Expo Night, and we were there. Details after the jump.

Oh well, I didn't have incredibly high hopes for this project anyway. Now I get the feeling we're talking about epic levels of fail.

Ok so the new episode of Avatar is at least briefly up on Youtube (start here), but don't expect it to remain there much longer. So far just a few seconds in I'm already dying, just dying. All I can say is that Zuko's sense of humor is pretty damn perfect. I mean that is precisely how I always figured he'd tell a joke. I just...wow... Can I love this show more than I do? Signs point to no.

Ok one spoilery bit here because, OMG... )

Ok a few more spoilers... )

After finishing parts one and two I can honestly say this set of eps kicked all kinds of ass. Yes there were some plot holes that could've been better handled, but the character moments and overall action more than made up for them.
ebonlock: (Glee!)
Ok this kinda makes me wish I'd gone to Wondercon this year so I could've seen it performed live, slightly spoilery for episode 13 of Avatar season 3:

If anyone heard some high pitched squeeing a couple of hours ago that would have been me watching the episode 12 of this season's Avatar thanks to the kindly folks here. I'd recommend grabbing it before it disappears, so worth the time to download. I will just say, [livejournal.com profile] elo_sf, know those theories I was espousing last night? Well I can confirm at least one of them now. Gosh I like it when the series writers do what I want them to do :)

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] windrose for the head's up!!

First, I took a personal day off today 'cause this weekend just wasn't long enough and I've got OMG so much vacation/sick time to burn that I can afford it. I'm about to run out the door to do a bunch of errands, but before I do I just heard from [livejournal.com profile] windrose that her Yule package already arrived and, being naughty, she opened it. So I can now share my creation with all of you.

Click here to see the quilt I made for her... )
And now I've got tons of errands to run and another trip to the post office to face, and as the precedent has been set, if you receive yours early feel free to go ahead and open it. I won't stand on ceremony this year ;)
ebonlock: (Glee!)
If you're caught up on this season's Avatar go read the latest post at Boozebenders for it is made of awesome. I don't agree with every point, especially on "The Headband" but I love reading enthusiastic fan response to one of my favorite series even when we diverge on the fandom path.

Now regarding last night's Heroes... )

Victory for Zim! I lost my internet connect for no obvious reason sometime late Friday night or early Saturday morning. This was vexing because I didn't have a monitor for my desktop which is what my cable modem and router are hooked up to. It was clear I was going to need to do some monkeying around on said computer so a monitor purchase was in my future. I considered blowing off class to go buy one, then talked myself out of that plan with a promise to hit Fry's on the way back.

Class was incredible. First I got there in time to see [livejournal.com profile] eilonwey in the beginner's group, who lured me into doing the Goddess double veil routine with her and Alyne after it. I was very nervous as I haven't danced the thing in years but it was so much fun and I only screwed up a little. She had to dash and I ended up getting a solo class with Alyne which was just a delight. I swear if I didn't already believe in magic I would have after meeting this woman. She's the only person I've ever known who just has to smile or give me a hug to take away all my worries and problems. She's...inspiring, not in an over the top kind of way, not in a way most people would even recognize, but just by being so inherently decent, kind and generous. She just has this aura about her that puts you in mind of someone like the Dalai Lama, a deep well of goodness and spirituality, but at the same time this passion for everything she does.

After class I ran some much needed errands and picked up a reasonably priced monitor at Fry's. A flat panel one too! Got home and showered and tidied up before [livejournal.com profile] moonlightnrain showed up for B7 night. We had a nice relaxed evening, which was good as I'd apparently inadvertently poisoned her the night before. Some people apparently react very badly to the chicken substitute Quorn and she would appear to be on that list. Good to know.

Later I watched my Japanese historical drama Furan Kazan which includes this OMG beautiful Buddhist monk/Warrior general character who I just like to stare at for as much of the hour as he appears in. I really must find out who he is and what else he's been in. Then I switched over to Adult Swim to see who'd won the viewer's choice contest and what they'd chosen to watch. Harvey Birdman and Venture Brothers, yee-haw! And my favorite ep of HB to boot (the one with the Jetsons). I don't know who the mystery viewer was but I loved their taste in animated series.

Sunday I slept in nice and late, then ran a few more errands, washed my poor long suffering car, and with the computer gods smiling down upon me benevolently, got my internet up and running again. When in doubt unhook everything and restart it all in the proper order. Sometimes the easiest answers are the correct ones.

Now, regarding this week's episode of Avatar, The Headband )
ebonlock: (airbenders)
Ok so I freely admit I'm a great big fangirl. I mean, seriously so...sometimes frighteningly so. Uh, admitting that I'd like to fess up to having actually bought a Ba Gua Eight Palms Meditation dvd. For those not in the know Ba Gua is the martial arts form used in Avatar: The Last Airbender by the Air Nomads. It's an incredibly pretty, flowing, light footed form and I quite enjoyed my first run through of the 8 mother palms. Makes me wish I could get up to Santa Rosa to take classes with the guy.

Best part? At least one of the palms I've seen Aang do and now I know how to do it. How cool is that? :)

Apparently there are scenes from this week's episode of Avatar "The Headband" up at Turbonick, it is a nightmare to navigate through so be prepared. [livejournal.com profile] hoshizora describes what he saw thusly:

It is by turns the funniest and most heartbreaking episode so far

Wow. Do I really have to wait until tomorrow night to see this? *whimper*

Also I have discovered that waiting until about 7:00 p.m. means I can drive 65 MPH all the way home. That is beyond awesome. Of course it gives me just enough time to feed the cats, water the garden, feed myself, watch TDS and CR, then mostly pass out. My hoped for exercise routine has gone right out the window which is not good. I need to ponder this.
ebonlock: (Aang)
New commercial for Avatar season 3! Just a few more days to go to the premiere and OMG I can barely stand the wait!

ebonlock: (airbenders)
Sweet! The first Boozebenders Podcast is available. I found the discussion of "the KISS" from the ComicCon trailer particularly entertaining :)

ZOMG!!!

Holy crap, if you haven't seen it yet get thee hence to AvatarSpirit.net to check out the season three teaser trailer from ComicCon. I'll try to embed it below here as well, but be sure you're sitting down when you watch it. Seriously it is...stunning. Jaw-dropping at points and the final battle sequence will KICK YOUR ASS.

Battle Sokka, wounded Aang, romantic Zuko (yeah, I know, you'll see), bitter Iroh and ass-kicking Toph. Wow...just wow...

UPDATE: BTW this cover image is rocking my world so very hard, Aang is beyond adorable but Zuko actually took my breath away. Um...yum...

[livejournal.com profile] moonlightnrain just dropped me a link to this piece on the Avatar third season which contains this juicy morsel:

This morning Paramount Home Entertainment has announced the DVD release of Avatar: The Last Airbender - Book 3: Fire, Volume 1 on October 30th. The first single-disc release contains the first 5 episodes of the new season, with a running time of about two hours. Those episodes are reportedly to be titled "The Awakening," "The Headband," "The Painted Lady," "Sokka's Master," and "The Beach." In order to get this release out at that time, with that many eps, and assuming they are waiting until after the 2nd season DVD collection hits in the second week of September, then Nick will have to begin broadcasting in the third or fourth week of September. Cost of the B3,V1 disc is expected to be $16.99 SRP, similar to the previous individual DVDs in this series. Here's a look at the packaging. Oh, look! Fire! Wait, when did Aang grow hair?

In case you're wondering what they're talking about on the Aang with hair front, click here to see the image from the cover of the first dvd. Aang with hair, and hey Kitara gets a new 'do as well! )

Damn that's hawt: Blue Spirit Mask on eBay
