I am currently actually watching a made for SyFy channel movie starring Joe Flanigan and John Rhys-Davies that involves giant monsters and what appears to be the same wooded area around Vancouver in which much of Stargate Atlantis was filmed. Craptastic? You betcha'. But I've actually missed seeing Joe regularly and so here I am...

Also I'm being drawn into Mycroft/Lestrade slash quite unexpectedly. I love the Sherlock series with an intensity that borders on the fanatical sometimes and Sherlock/Watson doesn't work for me on a variety of levels. Mind you I'm not saying I'll never read it, but my conception of Sherlock has always been that the man is completely asexual, and the series has definitely flat out stated that he's disinclined to romance and always has been. Well, the series goes even farther than that in "A Scandal in Belgravia" but I'll refrain from spoiling that.

But Mycroft, as cerebral as he most assuredly is, is also decidedly worldly and a man sometimes given to overindulgence (he mentions in "A Study in Pink" that he's been dieting and implies a long-term if not lifetime of weight issues) rather than complete non-indulgence. I can buy him as someone who'd hook up but only after he'd thoroughly vetted his intended partner and made absolutely certain he had and maintained the upper hand in the relationship.

It's also occurred to me that I may end up picturing Severus Snape as Benedict Cumberbatch in my mind's eye from now on. Can you imagine if they re-filmed the HP series and I got to see one of my favorite actors playing two of my favorite characters? That may be a happy place of mine for a long while.

In other fandom musings I'm still enjoying Person of Interest but the format with the expanded number of characters recently and the greatly expanded plot seems...untenable in the long term. I still like the characters and the basic concept but can they keep it going for another half a season? And beyond that, into multiple more 22 episode seasons? Now I know what you're thinking, "Oh you're just not getting enough Finch h/c", and you're right, I'm *so* not but that's not my main issue. I just really think JJ Abrams has way too many balls in the air right now, both within this series and without and as good as he is he can't keep them all spinning through the air indefinitely without something crashing down. It's still fun for the moment but I'm dubious about the future :(

So I got to see the pilot for "New Amsterdam" thanks to [livejournal.com profile] elo_sf and I think I can sum it up thusly:

Combine "Highlander"+"Forever Knight"+"Dresden Files", dial down the angst and dial up the dumb, that in a nutshell is "New Amsterdam".

The lead actor is certainly pretty enough, but when the sheer stupidity of the script and the cookie-cutter nature of the characters (i.e. tough female cop with a chip on her shoulder as the new rookie partner) makes you want to do the creators serious physical harm it's probably best to avoid the show. Also it contains yet another tribe of "magical Indians", which is a huge pet peeve of mine.

In other news I rather liked this week's Torchwood. I didn't even once have the urge to throw anything at the tv screen. I count that as a win.

And finally, after watching the two specials they ran Friday night for BSG I'm absolutely pining for the series to start up again. Seriously, I'd forgotten how much I love the show but that was a delightful reminder. Is it Friday yet?

Lovely weekend thanks in great part to [livejournal.com profile] aelfsciene, [livejournal.com profile] jakejr, and [livejournal.com profile] elo_sf who were all kind enough to spend parts of it with me. Am now about 1/3 of the way through season 4 of The Wire which just keeps getting better. And I saw episode 5 of Life On Mars which was really damned good. Only one episode in the season so far that I haven't liked, and the rest have been steadily moving towards perfection. Can't argue with that!

Possible spoiler for the next season of Dr. Who back here... )

And despite vowing no more toy purchases I'm not sure I can resist the new Snape figure with potions accessories. I suppose it could live at work where there's at least a little space left for toys. Right? Right.

I've found myself stumbling back into X-Files fandom quite accidentally lately. I started catching an episode here and there then realizing that by the power of TiVo I could have all of my faves without shelling out the cash for the boxed sets (and bunches of episodes I didn't give a shit about). Woo! Also spent some serious time tracking down a few of my all time favorite fics, including:

Oklahoma by Livengoo & Amperage- arguably the best X-Files fic ever written, it's actually set before the series starts. Fox Mulder is still working with the Behavioral Science Unit profiling killers. He's sent to Oklahoma to track down a "baby butcher" and the case slowly begins to unravel his mind. Beautiful, haunting, and steeped in a gritty hyper-reality that'll stay with you for years to come.

Etched by Sean Smith- Take Mulder and Scully, throw them, a CIA agent and a group of Navy Seals on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean, throw in the vicious creatures from the Aliens movies, and let the fun begin. If you loved the action and suspense of Aliens you'll love this story, it's fast-paced, intense and pays proper homage to both the tv series and the movies.

Hmm, I think I need an X-Files icon...

Holy freakin' god, [livejournal.com profile] isildurs_babe just did an illo inspired by my story Scale of Dragon, Tooth of Wolf that is so friggin' cool I must link to it:

Elementary

I am quite literally bouncing off walls. I never expected anything like the response the story has received so far, and this...wow...this just makes my lifetime! It's completely work safe, I promise, what are you still doing here? Go look!

I swear I'm going to be squeeing for the rest of the day :)
