So I got to see the pilot for "New Amsterdam" thanks to [livejournal.com profile] elo_sf and I think I can sum it up thusly:

Combine "Highlander"+"Forever Knight"+"Dresden Files", dial down the angst and dial up the dumb, that in a nutshell is "New Amsterdam".

The lead actor is certainly pretty enough, but when the sheer stupidity of the script and the cookie-cutter nature of the characters (i.e. tough female cop with a chip on her shoulder as the new rookie partner) makes you want to do the creators serious physical harm it's probably best to avoid the show. Also it contains yet another tribe of "magical Indians", which is a huge pet peeve of mine.

In other news I rather liked this week's Torchwood. I didn't even once have the urge to throw anything at the tv screen. I count that as a win.

And finally, after watching the two specials they ran Friday night for BSG I'm absolutely pining for the series to start up again. Seriously, I'd forgotten how much I love the show but that was a delightful reminder. Is it Friday yet?

Went through the last 3 Torchwoods last night. I think they've really picked it up the last couple of eps, and I am told there's some good payoff coming down the stretch, so I am willing to wait it out.

Meanwhile, Ronald D. Moore has climbed way up on some shit before, and it's never been higher than he thought...but damn, he better have a whole warren of rabbits in that hat this time.

I didn't throw anything at the TV, but I also didn't feel compelled to actually *look* at the TV while this week's Torchwood was on.

Also, the writer's really CANNOT figure out how to write a character that has no senses (Owen tested for the one girl's breath and heartbeat with his hand... which we've previously established can't feel anything??? Ri-fucking-diculous). They either need to magic him back to life for real or get rid of him altogether (I vote for the latter, of course).

Yeah he really doesn't know how to play a character without senses, but for the most part I generally just ignore the fact that he's supposed to be dead. It's just easier if I play along and forget everything the actors and writers seem to have.

I don't think you can lay that at the actor's feet, it was clearly in the script. Of course the entire thing is ridiculous when they still have the character *speaking* which involves breath and we can hear him sigh loudly, etc.

PS: You are so evil for leaving dessert behind. Don't think I'll have lost any weight this week as a result... despite exercising for an hour today.
