I've found myself stumbling back into X-Files fandom quite accidentally lately. I started catching an episode here and there then realizing that by the power of TiVo I could have all of my faves without shelling out the cash for the boxed sets (and bunches of episodes I didn't give a shit about). Woo! Also spent some serious time tracking down a few of my all time favorite fics, including:

Oklahoma by Livengoo & Amperage- arguably the best X-Files fic ever written, it's actually set before the series starts. Fox Mulder is still working with the Behavioral Science Unit profiling killers. He's sent to Oklahoma to track down a "baby butcher" and the case slowly begins to unravel his mind. Beautiful, haunting, and steeped in a gritty hyper-reality that'll stay with you for years to come.

Etched by Sean Smith- Take Mulder and Scully, throw them, a CIA agent and a group of Navy Seals on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean, throw in the vicious creatures from the Aliens movies, and let the fun begin. If you loved the action and suspense of Aliens you'll love this story, it's fast-paced, intense and pays proper homage to both the tv series and the movies.

Hmm, I think I need an X-Files icon...

You know? I've never read "Oklahoma" all the way through. Started it, LOVED it...and got so overwhelmed by it I had to stop. I get a little over-empathetic with these things. It really is THE classic X-Files fic, though. I think I might give it another try, now that I'm no longer so...invested...in poor Mulder. :)

Hey, did you ever read "Death Will Be Our Darling"? That is seriously the biggest MulderTorture medical-drama h/c angstfest I've ever read. The things that poor man's cranium goes through...the amount of painkillers and psychiatric drugs dripped into his arm...the sheer number of hospital hours logged...it's staggering. And a great read, actually.

I've never read "Etched" - I think I may need to. *pencils in*

You know DWBOD has been on my list to read since, well, forever, but if you give it some MT stars then I'm going to have to go read it. I keep trying to find the one where Mulder and Scully end up in an auto accident and Mulder gets seriously fucked up. Like down to one limb fucked up. As I recall it was really well done too.

But yes do go back to Oklahoma, it's so worth it and frankly everyone I've talked to in the fandom views it as canon for all intents and purposes. Certainly puts an interesting spin on "Grotesque" when you watch it again :) Of course anything by Livengoo and Amperage is worth reading, I was going to dive back into Corpse again but may go check out DWBOD first.

And Etched just rocks. It's a good X-File, a great monster story, fuckin' fantastic action/adventure story and scary as hell too. Great character interaction and oh yes, plenty of Muldertorture.

Oh my god, DWBOD gets all the MulderTorture stars I can give. He suffers enough for ten Mulders in that story. And all in a very realistic way - the writer is, if I recall correctly, an occupational therapist who works with people who've suffered head injuries and neurological damage and that sort of thing, so she knows all about what she's depicting. It's hot stuff.

Ok I'm so taking off early tonight and accomplishing nothing else but reading this story. Too bad the quilting will have to wait until tomorrow, but jeez, you just waved the red flag in front of my eyes ;)

Who knew we had the Muldertorture thing in common, now I'm even happier I posted about this this morning :D
