I was listening to KFOG on the way into work today and they had a great call in idea. Basically they asked this question, what song or songs do you listen to when you want to put yourself in a good mood? The callers had some truly great ideas but I'd love to hear what the folks on my f-list would choose. Personally I can never go wrong with "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" by the Police. How about you?

Oh good choices! Someone calling in this morning chose "Good Day Sunshine", which they then played and it definitely brightened my day.

Nice Weather For Ducks. Seriously, look it up on YouTube, it is impossible to feel anger while listening to that song.

Bloodhound Gang - The Bad Touch

Though that's more of a "I am about to stab someone and need to burn it off". A bit high-energy for the usual creation of happiness situations. Hum.

That would certainly be an interesting choice to set the tone for a day :)

"Litany (Life Goes On)" by Guadalcanal Diary. Been my preferred pick-me-up since high school. Ditto "Roam" by the B-52s.

I totally concur on "Roam", though there are few late 80's, early 90's pop tunes that won't work in a pinch. "Stand" by R.E.M. or almost anything by Adam Ant and HoJo pop immediately into mind as well :D

Lots and lots of songs. Yesterday it was "Who Got the Hooch?" "Hit" by The Sugarcubes. The Bens live cover of "I Touch Myself". "Back in the USSR." "The Ballad of John and Yoko." Most of Bob Marley's Legend (yeah, a greatest hits album). ELO's "Don't Bring Me Down" and "Mr. Blue Sky." Barenaked Ladies' "Another Postcard."

Also I've noticed I cannot listen to a Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me podcast without it completely elevating my mood.

It just occured to me that The Ballad of John and Yoko was probably in the top ten the day you were born. Your mother was having a Bed-In of her very own, wasn't she? :)

There's a whole "Antidepressant" list in iTunes, including such gems as the Pigeon Detectives - "I Found Out" and Hard-Fi - "Can't Get Along Without You" along with a bunch of Killers tracks. Also like antidepressants, they frequently do not work. ;]

Don't Get Me Wrong by the Pretenders, Something So Strong by Crowded House, Friday I'm in Love by The Cure (uh, the list is 80s heavy, obviously)

I'd say ...

Katrina & the Waves - Walking on Sunshine
Chumbawumba - Tubthumping
Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive
Adam Ant - Apollo 9
Stevie Wonder - Superstition (live on Sesame Street! Lucky kids!)
Arrogant Worms (or is it Tractor Jack?) - The Last Saskatchewan Pirate
B-52s - Roam (I third that motion!)
Art of Noise - Legs (or Peter Gunn)
Boney M - By the Rivers of Babylon
David Schwartz - Theme from Northern Exposure

Now that I'm home and can find my playlist.... The "Big Ballerina" protomix is chock full.
Sorted by artist:
Billy Bragg--Sexuality
Cake--Love You Madly and Short Skirt, Long Jacket
Cherry Poppin' Daddies--Jump in the Line (Shake, Senora)
Terence Trent D'Arby--If You Let Me Stay
Dandy Warhols--Bohemian Like You
Duran Duran--Reach Up for the Sunrise
Fountains of Wayne--Bright Future in Sales
Hot Chocolate--You Sexy Thing
Jane's Addiction--Been Caught Stealing
KC and the Sunshine Band--Boogie Shoes
Lyle Lovett--Straighten up and Fly Right
Max Raabe--Let's Talk About Sex
Right Said Fred--I'm Too Sexy
Scissor Sisters--Filthy/Gorgeous and Comfortably Numb
SemiSonic--FNT
Shakespeares Sister--Heroine
Shriekback--Get Down Tonight
Lavay Smith and her Red Hot Skillet Lickers--Blue Skies
Tones on Tail--Go!
Tufts Glee Club--SemiCharmed Life (Some day I'll hear the original)
KT Tunstall--I Want You Back

There's more, but I just haven't sorted them out yet. Things I can sing along with get bonus points. Eighties songs would probably compose a significant chunk of the list.

Oh duh.
Dar Williams's cover of Better Things *and* the first song I thought of when I saw this post, U2's Beautiful Day.

10cc - Dreadlock Holiday, although that might be too mellow.
Actually, a lot of Tori Amos cheers me up. Yeah, I'm weird. If I had to pick just one then Happy Phantom. But if I could pick more than one add Glory of the 80s, She's Your Cocaine, and Raspberry Swirl.
I'm a fan of big band for cheering-up, too. Almost anything by Duke Ellington, Glen Miller, etc. will get me going.
Cibo Matto - Sci Fi Wasabi, although Spoon is a close second and the entire Stereotype A is worthy.
Sting - Straight To My Heart, mostly because it's in 6/7.
John Hiatt - Little Head, although it might be a guy thing, but that guitar bend is something. Maybe Memphis in the Meantime instead?
Paul Simon - Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes
No Harry Belafonte? Can anyone remain blue in the face of Jump In The Line?
Finally, just to show how special I am: Junior Brown, Broke Down South of Dallas.

"Jump in the Line" is, quite possibly, the greatest happy song of all time. Though I have to admit that all these tunes are making me think a master mix of ultimate happiness should be assembled by someone...
