Ok so after the abomination that was XMen 3 I'd pretty much sworn off the series. I mean there's bad and then there's X3. However, XMen Origins: Wolverine is making me reconsider my position. In great part, I'm not ashamed to admit, due to the casting of one Taylor Kitsch as Remy LeBeau (a.k.a. Gambit). Yes, I know he was the same guy from the unbelievably wretched "The Covenant" (stop giggling, [livejournal.com profile] aelfsciene), but I totally forgive him. Just look at him in costume with the cards and the staff. Seriously, check it. Also Domonic Monaghan is in it playing...well somebody I don't honestly recognize who was apparently in an XMen spinoff called The Exiles with which I'm almost completely unfamiliar. Still, Dom!

And the Blob's in it which makes me giggle as I will forever hear the phrase, "No force on earth can move the Blob!" in my head in relation to the character. Uh, "Pride of the XMen" for those who aren't quite as geeky as myself. Ooh and someone confirm for me that there's a shot of baby Ororo in there as well. If anybody spots anyone else lemme know.

Anyway, nice copy of the trailer here.

Over the course of the XFilms, I have heard many words spoken about Gambit. The one thing they must not do, reports said, is miscast Gambit. Oh my god, fans would ask, is this the movie we get Gambit in?
I was nearly moved to go to Wikipedia to find out who he was. And now I won't have to! So long as Bret Ratner isn't involved, and the Phoenix promises not to show up again, I'm perfectly happy to see the new installment. However, I'm even more curious about who or what Gambit is, if he's in the origin episode for Wolverine and I didn't see him before I stopped reading. (Of course, I had no idea who DeathStryke was either. So take that with a grain of salt.)

At this point I'm figuring it will bear only the slightest resemblance to what I recall reading back in the 80's and 90's regardless. I'm ok with revisionism in the comic world even more than in other genres as there are so many alternate universes at play in any given X-title it's not even funny.

But thankfully for us all this is long before Phoenix, though apparently Scott's in it somewhere (presumably as a little kid). I don't recall Gambit being a part of Wolvie's backstory, then again I think my first real memory of him was during the whole Shi'ar story where they threw him and Jubilee together. So, again, I think they're going totally off book with this one. Indeed at this point a knowledge of the comics may be detrimental.

Kind of like watching Merlin. (:

And given that the comics themselves revised their own stories every couple of years in order to get themselves out of whatever muddle they've plowed into, I don't suppose I can fault the movie makers too much for that. (But I *can* fault them for Brett Ratner. WTF were they thinking?)

I'm afraid I have no answer for that, or at least one that doesn't involve a blackmail theory.

HAHAHAHAH. Oh gods, Taylor Kitsch. That's awesome. :)

(I've watched FNL. He is very, very pretty. I'm sure he'll do an ok job, it just amuses me to no end. :)

He's pretty and moves well, so he's got that going for him. However, the big question with Gambit is always can he do a Cajun accent convincingly. If the answer is no I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to see this film after all. Seriously I've heard a huge range of Gambits over the years thanks to the various animated series and I've yet to hear a good one.

Ooooo. That ... could be interesting.

ETA: And I withhold judgment on Gambit until I hear him speak. Pretty is one thing. Pretty and able to do a credible Louisiana/Cajun accent is another.

Heh, which is precisely what I just said to [livejournal.com profile] tersa. In all the years of animated XMen I've yet to hear a well cast Gambit. And you're absolutely right, if he mangles that it's all over.

BTW, your comment about Vegas and CSI has had me watching the latter most of the day. Despite the fact that each and every single episode I've figured out the killer/thief/whatever about halfway through, I found it mildly entertaining. I'm finding that these all day marathons are able to suck me into almost anything. Now, however, I switch to my beloved Japanese costume drama. It would seem that the Satsum clan are about to wage war upon the Tokugawa shogunate and things are heating up at the Ooku ;)

Oh, you don't watch CSI for the mysteries, they're far too easy to solve. You watch it for the characters and the soap opera-esque angst. *vbg*

I miss watching Asian costume dramas! All we get here are Spanish language telenovelas.

Has no one learned from my mistakes? ;) Seriously, though, if Wolvie and Gambit kissed I probably would buy the film. Does that make me a bad person?

There is a dark-skinned girl with bleach blonde hair at 1:52, but having Ororo anywhere near Canada is kind of silly. Although not a lot more silly than having Gambit in Canada.

Ok so I do recall a de-aged Ororo having been the one who originally joined up with Gambit and brought him onto the team but I don't understand how that plot fits in with the Wolvie backstory at all.

I remember Ororo being on the streets and she might have hooked up with Gambit at that point. But Wolverine hated Gambit when they first met.

How can you oubt the acting ability of someone from "Snakes on a Plane"?

From: [identity profile] ebonlock.livejournal.com
Precisely. Though the character does require a decent Cajun accent...unless they decided to make the character mute, in which case I can't really see a problem here :)

Emma Frost? Hmm, possibly but I didn't see her character listed on the IMDB page...

Given that they're throwing in everybody and the kitchen sink I shouldn't be too surprised.
