Woah...
Religion and Politics Clash
Religion and politics clash over a local church's declaration that Democrats are not welcome.
East Waynesville Baptist asked nine members to leave. Now 40 more have left the church in protest. Former members say Pastor Chan Chandler gave them the ultimatum, saying if they didn't support George Bush, they should resign or repent. The minister declined an interview with News 13. But he did say "the actions were not politically motivated." There are questions about whether the bi-laws were followed when the members were thrown out.
My favorite sentence: "the actions were not politically motivated."
Uh-huh. Aren't people supposed to be struck by lightning for shit like that? Now mind you, if a private church wants to kick members out that's its perogative, but doing so on the basis of peoples' political opinions and making membership dependent upon one's support of our current president seems a bit...well...crazy. It also seems like this is one church that should be losing its tax exempt status any day now, that is what's supposed to happen when you turn your religious pulpit into a political one, isn't it?
I'm betting this is just the tip of the iceberg.
