Woah...
Religion and Politics Clash
Religion and politics clash over a local church's declaration that Democrats are not welcome.
East Waynesville Baptist asked nine members to leave. Now 40 more have left the church in protest. Former members say Pastor Chan Chandler gave them the ultimatum, saying if they didn't support George Bush, they should resign or repent. The minister declined an interview with News 13. But he did say "the actions were not politically motivated." There are questions about whether the bi-laws were followed when the members were thrown out.
My favorite sentence: "the actions were not politically motivated."
Uh-huh. Aren't people supposed to be struck by lightning for shit like that? Now mind you, if a private church wants to kick members out that's its perogative, but doing so on the basis of peoples' political opinions and making membership dependent upon one's support of our current president seems a bit...well...crazy. It also seems like this is one church that should be losing its tax exempt status any day now, that is what's supposed to happen when you turn your religious pulpit into a political one, isn't it?
I'm betting this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Date: 2005-05-06 04:44 pm (UTC)On another note, NPR had a bit on Jerry Falwell's christian religious law school that is cranking out around 600 lawyers a year steeped in anti-gay, anti-religious-freedom, and anti-women legal arguments. But again, don't worry, Jerry Falwell is going to Hell. His minions are also going to Hell.
Or so we can hope.

Date: 2005-05-06 05:01 pm (UTC)As I don't believe in Hell it's kind of hard to take comfort in that. I think this report from one of the kicked out Dems was the most chilling: (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3604552#3604716)
"One of the local women who got excommunicated said on TV that it was like a cult. Another man who got excommunicated said that the rest of the congregation stood up and applauded as the Democrats were told to leave."

And proofread to boot
Date: 2005-05-06 06:05 pm (UTC)"I'm sorry, but which portion of laws dealing with bisexuals were you following when you evicted Democrats?"
(The correct word, of course, is "bylaw", as in "We are allowed to do so by law." referencing the founding documents of the organization. Sigh. Let's hear a raspberry for the editors of western North Carolina, as well as its clergy.)

Date: 2005-05-06 07:57 pm (UTC)Oh, "Return to Spider Skull Island", the last ep of the season, I got that one already. It is a superb play on "Rocky Horror", "Easy Rider" and all John Woo films. You'll love it. Also Hank makes a disturbingly attractive Columbia.

Date: 2005-05-07 04:22 am (UTC)And you'd be right. *sigh* Archbishop Hughes refuses to attend commencement ceremonies because someone getting an honorary degree has "gone against the church's fundamental moral principles."
Hughes said he does not want confuse the faithful by giving the "impression that it is appropriate to include in an honor anyone who dissents publicly from Church teaching" and therefore will not attend the ceremony.
