So I ordered something rather expensive with the hope that by having it shipped 2nd day UPS I would be able to track it and sign for it and know it would be safe. Big mistake. After waiting a few extra days after it was supposed to arrive I attempt to find a number to call on the site I ordered from. No luck. Finally I use a default number and talk to a nice man who gives me the correct number. I call and talk to a nice lady who tells me it was already delivered on the 6th. I say, no it wasn't. She checks with UPS, they claim they left it on my door. I say, no they didn't, and that I live in a gated complex and they would've had to call me or the manager to even get in the place. Nice lady transfers me to someone else. Second nice lady tells me the same thing, I tell her the same thing, she puts me on hold. When she comes back I ask why I wasn't required to sign for said package (as is standard UPS procedure), she has no answer, but says she'll ship me another order, expedited. I ask if I can get the tracking info for it, no go until after the order is placed. I will be calling back for the tracking number later today. I am now wondering if stupid UPS person either stuck said package out on top of the mail boxes, or did manage to somehow get into the complex and put said package at the manager's office. As I live next door to the manager, I should think he'd tell me by now.

UPS is notorious for not getting signatures for items requiring signatures. If you can call back to the company and ask that they tag the parcel as absolutely requiring a signature for delivery, then if you're not home they'll leave you a call tag and you can go down and pick it up from their facility.

Alteratively, couldn't you have it shipped to work?

Huh, that's odd. I live not far from Ebonlock, and UPS deliveries to our place when no one was home have been pretty universally 'stickie left on door saying 'signature required'' and no packages.

Our route may be different from hers, but...

Yes, that's the way it's supposed to work and has always worked for me in the past. As soon as I get a tracking number on it I intend to hound UPS.

My digital camera was left on the doorstep - Steve was not only home, but he was at his computer. The UPS guy knocked, and by the time Steve got to the front door, the guy was almost back into his truck. Steve saw the parcel, didn't bother calling him back over.

I was REALLY tempted to call UPS and file a claim on their insurance, I tell you ...

You are a better woman than I for resisting that temptation. Why is it so goddamn hard to get a signature? I mean the UPS guy at work is fanatical about it. If no one's home leave a notice, I don't mind going to the main office if need be, just to know my packages are safe. *sigh*

I'm sure there are many who file claims for "missing" parcels when signatures aren't obtained, but I'm equally sure there are a lot of people who don't bother.

My guess? The UPS guys know the stats on how many people file claims, and are on "once you're done delivering all this stuff, you're done for the day" - and balancing the two, they know that if they wait at the door for every parcel, the day will end sometime around 8pm, versus if they have a claim filed against them once a month (or whatever) it won't really affect their job security.

I'm sure UPS wouldn't care to confirm these suspicions though!

Like elf said - I've almost NEVER had them actually wait for a signature even when it was required.

Then there was the time they not only had the wrong address, but they did not leave a package (at that same wrong address!) because they said 'but it contains alcohol!' .... nevermind that the TAPE HOLDING THE BOX SHUT says repeatedly 'does not contain alcohol'

I hate UPS with the white hot passion of 10000 suns. I only ever use UPS when it's free - at least then I know I'm getting what I paid for.

If I'd been smart, yeah, but the original delivery date was for Saturday so I figured, hey I'll be home. Very dumb.

I hate UPS. I always go for USPS instead if I can.

I mean, I'm stuck waiting for a package today because I had a sticky on my door yesterday, was home all damn day, and never heard a knock or buzzer. This happens to me all the time unless I put a big "KNOCK LOUDLY" sign on my door.

Meh.

When I get UPS deliveries they don't even bother to knock or ring the bell. There have been times when my mother and I have both been home, a few yards from the front door, and no ring or knock. Yet there the package is. That's why I have to keep checking obsessively, because I've checked at, say, 5:30 and no delivery, then I check at 6:30 or 7:00 or so and there it is. Very aggravating, especially if it's something expensive, fragile, or both.

Almost forgot, check out this link for info on a video interview with Simon and Edgar about the "Shaun of the Dead" US DVD release.

Oy, have we been there... My mother sent us a package for Valentine's this year. UPS didn't honk, knock or call - they dumped it over our fence into the yard (it had breakables, which fortunately did not break). Leeta ate all the chocolate and candies and chewed up the cards and a Koontz book my brother had sent for me.

Well I have a small white dog that pricks up her ears when the truck turns the corner and by the time the UPS driver (Tony, yes I know his name cause he stops here a lot) gets out she is already barking. He is really cool about leaving things he will hide them on the porch, but dosen't always get a signature, now the guys at work are totaly different but Corp or commercial is different he knows someone is there to sign. I will be sending year end gifts USPS like always, but this has raised some doubts.

I should say I've had no problems receiving regular USPS stuff, I think because the mailman actually can get into the complex to deliver stuff easily. The mail person who delivers packages also seems to have a clue about where to put them so they're not swiped, not so with the UPS guy apparently.
