Jun. 2nd, 2008 12:41 pmHad a fantastic weekend that started with a free pizza from ZPizza, which has a new store on Castro St.
moonlightnrain and I thoroughly enjoyed it while we watched the season premiere of Venture Brothers on Adult Swim which was to die for! Seriously all Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend all the time! Then we got about halfway through Sweeney Todd before the DVD locked up and my player said, "None for you". There was a fair bit of gnashing of teeth but we contented ourselves with movie trailers and the utterly wretched Sarah Jane Adventures until Dr. Who finally came on. Continue to worship Donna like the goddess she is and to wish that Martha would die a quick but incredibly painful death. BSG continues to make me very, very happy which is good as it had a somewhat wobbly start this season.
Saturday started with a nice long walk with
elo_sf and ended with some quality time with
aelfsciene. There were lots of errands and chores in between so I ended up feeling quite accomplished at the end of the day. Sunday was a bit more leisurely and culminated with dinner and a movie in PA with
cyranocyrano and
moonlightnrain. We went to see The Fall and I can honestly say it was one of the most completely satisfying movie experiences I've had in a very long time. Don't get me wrong I loved Iron Man and for what it was it was great. But The Fall was just so much more, more complex, more beautiful, more emotional. It kind of reminded me of the difference between eating a Hershey bar versus a Lindt truffle. The costumes were just jaw-droppingly gorgeous, the locations made me occasionally forget to breathe, and the acting and writing exquisite. I also had my first maternal instinct during the film, falling madly in love with Catinca Untaru's character Alexandria. I defy anyone to resist that little girl, if you have a soul I insist it's impossible. Oh and C-, she is, in fact, Romanian so you totally called that one :)
Aside from the beauty of the film, the interactions between Pace and Untaru often read as sweetly genuine. We were all commenting that we'd love a look at the script because a good portion of their scenes together seemed improved. The emotional impact of the movie was also impressive, when I ended up crying (and again, I defy anyone to make it through this one dry eyed) it was for the right reasons. I didn't feel manipulated into it, which was such a lovely change.
The movie was everything I'd hoped and more, and for those who found the plot "confusing" I can only say they must not have been paying much attention. If The Fall ends up nominated for a slew of Oscars (and oh lord it should!) I will actually tune in and cheer it on this year.
