May. 17th, 2009 04:26 pmI've just seen Star Trek, and without an extended squee of complete fannish giddyness I can only say that I loved every single second of it. Yeah there were plot holes big enough to fly the Enterprise through, but I didn't care. It was fan service of the most glorious kind, seriously if you were a fan of the original series you will find almost too many glorious quotes and guest appearances to keep track of. I'm sure I missed a bunch, even though I was paying very close attention, but everything I caught made me actually bounce in my seat like a little kid.
Zachary Quinto bugged me a little at the beginning of the film because it was hard to separate him from Sylar. As I commented to
tersa, he had that "I want to eat your brain" look in his eye for about the first 1/3 of the film, but I got past it. This is quite an accomplishment as I loathe him as Sylar, but he totally grew on me as Spock. I will admit Carl Urban stole every scene he was in as McCoy. Not bad for a Kiwi doing a Georgia accent, and he just nailed the character. I think my only complaint about the movie would be there wasn't enough Simon Pegg/Scottie in it because he just lit up every second he was on screen. You could tell he was quite literally having the time of his life in the role.
Honestly I don't think I can point out a single example of miscasting. Sulu was superb and I swear I could hear George Takei howling with glee somewhere. Chekov was adorable, Uhura both competent and HAWT, and Pike quite serviceable (though a tad under used). Even liked Sarek and Amanda, and I've had a profound love for the two characters since I was a kid, so that's saying something.
I will not only watch this film again, I will buy it the day it's released and I'm on board for the sequels. I love the revamp of the universe and can't wait to see where they go with it. Seriously, if you haven't seen it, go now, you will not be disappointed.
Also totally worth paying the extra cash for IMAX, the picture quality and sound is phenomenal. You can actually feel the ships going into warp. I was in fangirl heaven!
