Jul. 25th, 2011 08:30 pmI'm finding myself very ambivalent about the first few episodes of this season. I mean I want to love it as much as I did last season but I can't quite make the leap. They started right out of the gate with a sci-fi/fantasy trope I detest, i.e. Sookie being in the faerie realm for a few minutes and a year passing in the real world so the writers could just handwave things like Arlene's pregnancy, Hoyt and Jessica's relationship deteriorating, the fallout from Sam shooting Tommy, etc., etc. The whole nonsense in faerie was bizarre and kind of goofy, killing grandpa off 10 minutes after we met him was pointless. And speaking of pointless deaths, poor Claudine! She got turned into a vampire juicebox after a very brief scene and before she even had a chance to explain herself. Seriously, WTF?
But the biggest problem I've got with the show right now is the coven leader, Marnie and the ancient, clearly pissed-off Wiccan spirit that occasionally inhabits her. Now I know we're supposed to see her as something of a threat, that the vampires are somehow justified in their actions against her and her coven but all I'm seeing is a persecuted woman, or should I say, women, with a whole lot of justification for hating vampires and striking back against them. Indeed I'm actively cheering her on, clearly she and her historical counterpart are totally in the right here and clearly the vamps don't like any mortals having enough power to actually fuck with them. Goddamn I'm actively starting to hate the vamps. If I were Marnie I'd have quietly and calmly pointed out to Bill that if vamps would please stop fucking with me I'd be happy to stop fucking with them.
Ok, beyond that why is Debbie still alive? And OMG she is going to destroy Alcide when she goes bad again and I actually like him. Why did Pam's face get fucked up? I mean beyond the gross factor of parts of her face and head falling off randomly what purpose does it serve? Also can we get something more than the creepy doll occasionally showing up? I mean give us something! The Jason thing is just weird, and the whole rape sequence and near child porno bit was...disturbing to say the least. The only positive outcome for all of this that I can see is Jason going were-panther and ripping Crystal's throat out during the full moon. Gah, also Sookie going all moist and weak in the knees over Eric, completely forgetting what a shit he is most of the time and how he and Bill betrayed her oh so recently, just makes me want to beat my head against the wall.
If I had to say something positive about the season I would go with Tara and her hot MMA girlfriend, also her righteous indignation about Sookie going all gooey over Eric. Speaking of Eric, do enjoy him in puppy mode but the drunk scene, killing Claudine, and his overprotectiveness of Sookie is getting annoying. And I have to say I quite enjoy Sam and Tommy regaining their relationship over getting rid of bodies together. I mean you know you're bonding when you're helping your little brother dump your trainwreck parental units in the swamp. And how awesome is a big brother who not only knows where to take the bodies, but brings along some marshmallows to attract the gators to them? And then gives you a pep talk when you start to lose it over having killed your parents? Can't say I was sorry to see either mommy or daddy dearest end up battered and bloody when they tried to literally drag Tommy back into the dog fighting ring. Also massive, massive props to Tommy for coming up with a way to get Sam and himself out of trouble with Andy without having to kill our favorite alcoholic/vampire blood junkie sheriff. This may sound weird but Tommy has become a character I've really wanted to see get a chance at redemption and I really, really want him and Sam to be the brothers they should've been all along.
Also any bets on who Sam's new hottie shifter girlfriend's werewolf ex is? I'm really hoping it's either Marcus or one of his pack so we might get the awesome throwdown wherein Sam turns into a lion and kicks awesome amounts of ass. Oh please, oh please, oh please!
Ok I think I've gotten the worst of it out of my system, but if I've overlooked any glaring awfulness, or been too hard on something feel free to share it in the comments.
Now speaking of a show I'm thoroughly falling in love with, Alphas continues to impress me deeply. This week's ep had a nice twist, an impressive amount of character development, and a downright shocking sequence that led to a truly unexpected character death. Also the whole Binghamton thing and Dr. Rosen's part in it is becoming increasingly fascinating. I am loving this show and nobody could be more shocked than I, I mean it's a Sci-Fi Channel series (not spelling it the dumb way, sorry)! It's filling the spot left empty with the end of the Breakout Kings season.
