First and foremost many thanks to those who came to my little birthday get together on Saturday. I know I wasn't much of a hostess thanks to the whole lost dog thing but I tried to spend at least a bit of time with everyone and despite the craziness I hope everyone managed to have a fairly good time. I know I did :) There were many gifts, much food, a lost dog reunited with her very grateful owner and another viewing of X-Men: First Class...with which I must now admit to being utterly, hopelessly obsessed.

Seriously, I'm supposed to be writing Breakout Kings fic and all I've got spinning around my head is this scene of Charles in the hospital contemplating life after the beach scene. I mean I've always adored Charles Xavier but I've never before been utterly nuts about him. I'm devouring C/E fic like there's no tomorrow. I'm going to have to see the movie at least one or two more times before it's out of theaters because it's going to be a long wait until it comes out on video...

Oh man, this movie gave me new and unexpected love for Charles. I'd always found him really rather boring before, but young, ineptly flirtatious, intensely emotional Charles...YES PLEASE. James may have something to do with that, it's hard to say. I have too many fics I want already.

I think the intense empathy, kindness and generosity of the character really intrigued me. The dry wit and devastating good looks didn't hurt, mind you, but when you stop and think about it why did he turn out that way? I mean he should, by all accounts, have been a spoiled brat who looked a lot more like that boy from the Twilight episode who sent people to the cornfield when they didn't do exactly what he wanted. Why wasn't he mind fucking his parents, his teachers, hell everyone around him to get exactly what he wanted out of life? Why wasn't he jaded and cynical after seeing what goes on in peoples' minds day in and day out? Why when he finds Raven in his kitchen is his first response, "Take whatever you want" and then inviting her to stay with him? Ok, sure loneliness was a big part, but to have every reason in the world to be a class-A douche and not to be, that's just so profoundly appealing to me.

Although I must admit there is one thing about the film that continues to bug me, why do they refer to themselves as "Children of the Atom" when many of them quite clearly pre-dated the atomic age? Still trying to work that one out. Also is Alex now Scott's dad, 'cause that's the only way that timeline is going to work...

I think timeline just has to be ignored completely, because seriously, there's no way they can work out Scott and Alex being brothers like this. I don't know about the atomic age. I suppose it could be fanwanked that there was obviously nuclear research going on before the bomb was dropped? And it...leaked? I DON'T KNOW, I'M JUST HERE FOR THE MANPAIN.

And yesssss, all those things about Charles. I just loved his innate goodness and gentleness, without making him neutered or spineless or perfect. He was so appealing.

I would say manpain combined with slashability (or just bromance if you prefer), totally, yeah. I actually made the mistake of watching Wolverine: Origins again the other night and I was like ok so that film works in the original timeline (mostly) but I'm just going to have to see First Class as an AU and I am totally ok with that.

Given what they do in the comics this is really nothing by comparison I suppose.

He was kind of James Bond mixed with Martin Luther King Jr. and the Dalai Lama. The thing is I desperately want to learn how he became that way. Why wasn't he constantly mind fucking everyone around him? Why no, "I want a pony, mummy, I want a pony right now!"? Why when he can see how screwed up people truly are does he still insist on seeing the best in everyone? I want backstory so badly here I can taste it.

And they were playing two of my all time favorite characters...in the 60's! I tried watching bits of the first two X-Men films last night and aside from Kurt taking out the entire Secret Service sequence they were just so sad and lame compared to "First Class". Why can't it be out on video already? Why?!
