The house buying process seems designed to drive me slowly batshit. I swear the broker contacts me roughly every 48 hours with an even crazier request. The latest is a copy of my actual social security card. Mind you I think the last time I saw the thing was in college. Who in the hell needs an actual copy of someone's social security card?

Gah.

So anyway, this means I'm going to be hiking over to the social security administration office on my lunch break tomorrow to get a copy of said card. I have to think this won't be the last ridiculous request before the house is actually mine. I just keep telling myself it'll be worth it in the end.

Speaking of, I met with the owner of the park yesterday and though a bit overly chatty, I quite enjoyed it. I did find out I can put up the fence around my yard that I plan to and that Comcast does not cover the park so if anybody here goes with DirecTV and likes it, lemme know. They're in the forefront right now of my choices.

Also my new yard is going to require some serious work. There's a tree growing in front of my shed and two large black barrels that may, or may not, have been used for composting at some point. Also interestingly the people seem to have left a gorgeous little stone Buddha out there. I've always wanted one of those so I really hope they've abandoned it. I shall be very happy to adopt it :)

I had DirecTV and liked it. Dropped it because I wasn't watching enough TV to justify $50 a month, but it was fine while I had it.

I haven't had any woes with DirecTV. If you use AT&T for your local and/or long distance phone and/or DSL, I think you can get bundles with DirecTV that may save you some coin. (Although at that point, you might should look into whether AT&T provides U-Verse service there - record four channels at once...)

The only catch is that you'll have to use their DVR. I don't know if you can even attach a TiVo or other 3rd party DVR to their service, or indeed anything other than analog cable. On the other hand, you can program the DirecTV DVR over the web on days you forget to set it...

OMG yes with the wacky requests!

And I hear you on the yard thing. Mine's all on a hill, to make things more interesting. I've done absolutely nothing with it yet other than paying someone alot of money to mow it.

Buddha statue ftw! (I think *that* may be what I'm missing by the back door... in the area that's going to be as close as I can get to a courtyard)

:)

I must admit the Buddha statue almost made up for all the crap they left behind out there. I'll have to be sure to mention to the realtor that her handyman not touch it whilst doing the repairs.

*Definitely*. Never ever assume anything when dealing with realtors and their associates. ;) (and don't necessarily assume they'll know what you mean when you say 'buddha statue'. be specific about the happy fat guy)

Maybe I'll just tuck him away someplace safe so there's no temptation for them to lay a hand on him. If I get the chance I'll take a pic of him the next time I'm over there.

Also a viable option. I didn't mention it before because I didn't know if it would be too cumbersome or not. Also, didn't know if disturbing the little man would bother you on some level. ;)

I think he can be moved, and I just pinged the realtor regarding stuff in the garden and whether the sellers might come back for any of it, so we'll see. She's having her guys start to work next week and says we should be able to close as soon as June 22nd. Of course I want to hear that from the broker before I really believe it.

Is it wrong that a big part of me is rather looking forward to canceling my Comcast account? Ever since they hired that Ben Stein douche for their commercials I've been thinking about it.

You got yourself a quick closing. And I thought mine was fast (had to get it done before the down payment assistance program ended).

I need to see if I can get a garden-minded friend of mine to help me figure out what to do with my yard. It needs help, but I don't have any proper money for it (all the extra money needs to go to stuff *inside* the house). But I've got at least one friend (though not local) who might have some keen ideas on the cheap.

:)

I'm really excited for you. The whole house thing is awesome.

Oh, and it is not wrong to be excited about cancelling Comcast. Kinda offsets the fact that I'm gonna have to sign up for digital cable with Time-Warner (I'm not sure if the regular is going to cut it with the shiny new telly).

I have directv through a central dish at my apartment complex. It is fine and cheaper than comcast would be. JakeSr has it at his house, too.

And I use my tivo with it just fine. You just have to hook up the IR dealie because there is no port for the direct line controller.

Ah well that takes care of my final concern right there. And yes on the cheaper thing, OMG, I could get the first 12 months for like $39 a month. Sounds good to me.

We're also directv fans, we've had it since before we bought our place - if you go that way, there's a referral program too, I think. Might not save you much, but it might save someone else some ;)

Since you mentioned it first, what would I need to do? I'd be happy to do the referral thing if it can save a friend a little cash.

pick your favorite;) friend and ask for their account number. Looks like both you and they get a $10 credit each month for ten months.

Send me your account number via email and I'll get you hooked up when I order my account :)

Don't you remember how crazy I was during the house buying process?? I honestly agree that the whole process is designed to drive one into the looney bin. I still have PTS from it and have told Jim that I will never do it again! So a hearty Good Luck to you, sister!!!

And also, we love our DirectTV. I know I'm a whole country away, but just thought I'd add my 2 cents! :)

Good luck at the Social Security Administration. Fridays can be a bit hairy, but we're not at the beginning of the month, so it shouldn't be a three hour wait or anything. Although first thing in the morning comes more highly recommended than lunch time.

I'm shooting for 11-ish, have all my paperwork filled out, and am determined to think positive.

So how'd it go? Take any heads?

It went reasonably well once I actually found the place. The directions were somewhat...lacking. I got a little reading done while waiting (about a half an hour) and it took me all of 5 minutes to get the process on getting a new card started. Now I just wait for a couple of weeks to actually receive it.

I've been mostly a skimmer when it comes to LJ, so I apologize if I missed the info, but... where is your place? Inquiring minds wanna know! And do you need help packing and/or moving? I remember offering before, but I don't remember a reply. (And if you did reply, please accept my sincerest apologies!)

Ping me via email and I'll send you the new address. I expect I'll be doing tours as soon as the keys are in my hands :) And as soon as I have an actual moving date I may be asking folks for a little help, though I'm hoping to be able to hire movers this time.
