I've just seen Star Trek, and without an extended squee of complete fannish giddyness I can only say that I loved every single second of it. Yeah there were plot holes big enough to fly the Enterprise through, but I didn't care. It was fan service of the most glorious kind, seriously if you were a fan of the original series you will find almost too many glorious quotes and guest appearances to keep track of. I'm sure I missed a bunch, even though I was paying very close attention, but everything I caught made me actually bounce in my seat like a little kid.

Zachary Quinto bugged me a little at the beginning of the film because it was hard to separate him from Sylar. As I commented to [livejournal.com profile] tersa, he had that "I want to eat your brain" look in his eye for about the first 1/3 of the film, but I got past it. This is quite an accomplishment as I loathe him as Sylar, but he totally grew on me as Spock. I will admit Carl Urban stole every scene he was in as McCoy. Not bad for a Kiwi doing a Georgia accent, and he just nailed the character. I think my only complaint about the movie would be there wasn't enough Simon Pegg/Scottie in it because he just lit up every second he was on screen. You could tell he was quite literally having the time of his life in the role.

Honestly I don't think I can point out a single example of miscasting. Sulu was superb and I swear I could hear George Takei howling with glee somewhere. Chekov was adorable, Uhura both competent and HAWT, and Pike quite serviceable (though a tad under used). Even liked Sarek and Amanda, and I've had a profound love for the two characters since I was a kid, so that's saying something.

I will not only watch this film again, I will buy it the day it's released and I'm on board for the sequels. I love the revamp of the universe and can't wait to see where they go with it. Seriously, if you haven't seen it, go now, you will not be disappointed.

Also totally worth paying the extra cash for IMAX, the picture quality and sound is phenomenal. You can actually feel the ships going into warp. I was in fangirl heaven!

Oh, man, WHEW. I was so very worried that you would hate it. But you don't, and now we can go SQUEE! together like a couple of teenage fangirls. &hearts

ETA: Oh, What You Said about not enough Simon Pegg. Also? I adore Zachary Quinto as Spock, as witnessed by my icon.

I'll admit that I was very nervous about Sarek and Amanda. Mark Lenard had some HUGE shoes to fill, but Ben Cross did remarkably well. Winona Ryder really had me nervous when I heard that casting, but she was fabulous.

You've seen my tattoo; if not, that's it in the icon. I had incredibly high hopes for this movie, and was definitely not disappointed. JJ Abrams re-lit my love of Star Trek again, and for that, I'm incredibly grateful.

OMG yes! I'm already in hot pursuit of fic because the possibilities are friggin' endless. Also U/S is working for me in decidedly weird ways.

I think my only complaint about Amanda (and it's minor) is that she wasn't a blonde. I always found it decidedly comforting that Vulcans seemed to dig the blonde chicks. I really liked the moment between Sarek and Spock where his dad admits he married mom because he loved her, though I was weirded out by how proud/loving this Sarek was. Their relationship was so strained in the original that it was kind of puzzling.

And now I need to go re-read one of my all time fav OS books, "The Vulcan Academy Murders". Then maybe "Black Fire"...and a few others while I'm at it. Yeah, I'm right there with you about re-igniting the love, especially after Voyager and Enterprise nearly destroyed it for good.

If you find any good fic, let me know!

I seem to be developing a K/McC kink, something I never would have considered in the Original Series. o.O

OMG, I will pay you to write this.

Seriously.

LOL!

I can't right now, too many other irons in the fire at the moment; go read my trip reports for details, if you want them. I will, however, keep it in mind for when I'm between projects. ;)

You may want to read this.

More as I find 'em. Also? I so need a McCoy icon.

Oooohhhh yes.

And I too need a McCoy icon that reads "Wait, I can fix that!" because that line and delivery just about killed me.

I already wanted to see this ... and now I've heard so many positive reports that now I know I simply *must* see this. Just waiting for the Hollywood to pick it up.

Yeah!! I'm so glad you loved it! I was starting to get worried since some hard core nerds have been anti-JJ - insane! Wasn't McCoy just the bee's knees! I can't wait to see it again...maybe when we're down to visit we can catch a showing? We don't have it in IMAX here.

Oh, totally off subject...do you have a hair dryer and iron?!

I will send you an excerpt from my zombie story if you write me a snippet (300 words?) of McCoy/Kirk. And yes, I looked at the story linked above, but the voices seemed too far off and I just couldn't get through it.

You know it hit me last night that there was one thing I didn't like so much about the film, and that was the fact that Spock wasn't as isolated as he'd always been previously.

First we never got the indication that he and his dad weren't on speaking terms because he chose Starfleet. That whole family rift was missing (and gods it makes me want to go watch "Journey to Babel" like you cannot believe). For another thing in the original series Spock was one of the only aliens in Starfleet at the time. So he was not only taking abuse from the Vulcans, but dealing with a lot of bigotry from humans too. Indeed I never felt so much for him in TOS than when the humans would gang up on him and have a laugh at the expense of the alien. This new, improved and open minded version of Starfleet had kind of sanitized that away.

Then you throw in bagging Uhura and most of the conflict is gone. By the end of the film he and his dad are mostly fine, the new crew's pretty much embraced him (save McCoy, bless is heart) and he's dating the ship hottie. I dunno', I'm having a little trouble relating to that.

Though I will say I kind of liked the new more feral take on Vulcans. Instead of the original version where they were rather icy and aristocratic, this time there's this barely contained volcano in each of them. Indeed during the "take this Vulcan Academy of Science job and shove it" sequence, Spock had a perpetual look of barely contained homicide on his face. Maybe I'm seeing too much Sylar right there but he really did look like he wanted to rip the guy's brain out and skull fuck him.

Actually I was going to suggest that we go Wednesday night to the IMAX as Angie hasn't seen it yet. I can go ahead and get the tickets if that sounds good to you.

And iron yes, but dryer no.

Really? I liked that one a lot. And I'll ponder it, 300 words, huh?

One can only assume that the destruction of the Kelvin changed a lot more than just Kirk's first 25 years of life. It obviously accelerated the development of technology in the Federation, and probably interspecies relations as well.

As for the more feral Vulcans ... I've been calling Reboot Universe Spock "Sylar!Spock", which annoys [livejournal.com profile] aithine because now she's doing it, too. *g* But yeah, he's not our Spock. Our Spock never scared the crap out of me. Quinto's take on the character has much more of an edge than Nimoy ever did. It's different, and it will take some getting used to.

Well, I wanted to give you more words than a drabble, but let you know it wasn't a big committment time-wise. It needn't be exactly 300.

And yeah, once again I hated a fic that 100+ people seem to have loved. The minute Bones started cradling Jim's head and Jim kissed the inside of his wrist I balked. Just... buh? That didn't read as in character to me at all.

Sure Wednesday sounds cool with us, we might be a bit jet-lagged so the earlier the better I think!
