None more, none more awesomer!
Now that's what I'm talking about. I knew it was going to be a good episode when it started with House in the bathtub. I'm sorry but it honestly seems to me that no episode that involves House naked can possibly end badly. I know I've probably just jinxed some future ep by saying that, but I stand by the assertion to date.
But more the more important indicator was that House was having a bad pain day, and when he's having a bad day I know I'm going to have a very good one. That combined with finding out that Cameron was behind this week's patient and a great episode was pretty much guaranteed. But it gets even better, the patient is suffering from chronic pain and attempting to end his life.
Oh yes.
The kicker, though, for me was the fact that they seem to have completely forgotten all about the whole House/Cuddy luuuuuv thang and for that I was intensely grateful. Cuddy is all wrapped up in her new baby (and rightly so), and feeling utterly overwhelmed. She's got no time for House's nonsense and when she tells him that he and Cameron will just have to play nicely without her I wanted to cheer. I thought her subplot was very well done, realistic and beautifully handled. The scene with Wilson was just perfect, and as usual his advice was spot on. But OMG when she asked Cameron to help her with her job I cheered aloud. It was a brilliant move on the writers' part and the character's and god I love when that happens. I'd been fretting at the beginning of the episode that Cuddy might step down and nobody could possibly take her place because nobody would put up with House. And by that I mean nobody would understand and love him enough to put up with the general insanity...nobody except Cameron, of course. Sometimes I really like being wrong.
Watching House actually empathizing with a patient was refreshing, and the scene between the two of them when the guy asks him if the pain is getting worse and House admits it is was just wrenching. Especially when the guy then goes on to comment that he's what House has to look forward to (as if he didn't know that already). The man's very realistic desperation, and his comment that House has it easy in a way because he doesn't have anyone he has to hide the pain from, he can just go home and feel like shit and nobody's relying on him, were spot on. I like that every once in a while the audience is reminded just what House has to live and function with every single day, it's too easy to get caught up in his antics and overlook the other side of his life.
I thought the family's reactions were realistic and terribly sad, especially the little boy. The drama was well done and I could utterly sympathize. The Ducklings' subplots were also fairly interesting and I must admit that Kutner has totally become my favorite of the new crew. I was also amused by just how much like House Foreman really has become...I fear for his relationship with 13. When House immediately picked up on their relationship and referred to him as "14" I about lost it. Oh and the reveal at the end about 13 being one of the placebo patients in the study was just devastating. Can't wait 'til she finds that out. Will Foreman tell her?
Loved the resolution at least in part because god I needed a happy ending for somebody. And the line from this one that kicked my ass good and proper? When the repair guy asks House if he's happy after "sticking it to the man" and House replies, "Nope, but I'm right." And if that doesn't sum the character up nothing could. His final realization regarding how his pipes got screwed up and his rueful smile were just the icing on the cake. The cherry on the icing was that he ended up naked by the end of the episode again.
*happy sigh*
