Anyone who grew up in the south or was raised by those who did will groan aloud when they read this:

In a Washington D.C. conversation with reporters, the two-term Sharpsburg congressman was discussing the speech of Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin when he was asked to compare her with Michelle Obama.

“Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they’re a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they’re uppity,” Westmoreland said, according to The Hill, a newspaper that covers Capitol Hill.

When asked to clarify, Westmoreland said, “Uppity, yeah.”

Sadly, No! has also included the Stephen Colbert "Better Know a District" interview with Westmoreland that has gone down in history as one of the most brilliant moments of political satire. The infamous "Ten Commandments" question. Yes, this is the same idiot.

Is anybody - I mean, seriously, anybody AT ALL - remotely surprised by this?

The only really shocking thing here is that it took until September to hit publicly.

(And God knows this will start all kinds of trouble, but the reason scalawags like myself are uppity is because we really are better than them.)

This honestly took me a minute or so to process, largely because I'd mostly heard the phrase "uppity woman" while growing up (my mom, who has a huge feminist streak, used to wear a lapel pin with that phrase on it). The word "uppity" has a positive, powerful context for me that's independent of race (then again, I'm a northern girl).
