No, seriously, DOOM:

The Last Airbender Will Be M. Night Shyamalan's Star Wars

M. Night Shyamalan has finished his script for The Last Airbender, the live action movie based on Nickelodeon's epic cartoon, Avatar — and he's told Paramount and Nickelodeon that he thought they had a new Star Wars on their hands. Shyamalan screened a rough teaser trailer at the New York Licensing Expo Night, and we were there. Details after the jump.

Oh well, I didn't have incredibly high hopes for this project anyway. Now I get the feeling we're talking about epic levels of fail.

I've been afraid ever since they announced he was directing.

God, why Shyamalan? Why him, of all directors? He's a competant director, but something like Avatar is so far out of his style that it's like wearing a Gestapo uniform at a World War II Veterans Convention.

Oh me too, but to have him actually declare the project the equivalent of Star Wars makes me want to bury my face in my hands and just weep.

I have no friggin' clue, then again I don't know why in the hell they keep giving this man film projects in general.

I've been thinking the same thing. And if THE HAPPENING is really as bad as I've heard (which is pretty freaking BAD) I'm sure the folks who handed him Avatar will be donning flak jackets and preparing to write the whole feature-film franchise off....

It's actually worse, I read the spoilers and early reviews and I couldn't believe this project got made...neither could the reviewers.

I suspect we've been reading the same sources. It sounds like this turkey has taken Deep Hurting to unheard of levels of pain.

Maybe the project will get stuck in development hell and never get made. That would be better than the crap-fest that Shamalamadingdong will give us. :(

Wait, am I reading this right? Some dude's taking an animated cartoon and turning it into a live-action (with CGI) feature film?

Now, I don't know who Shyamalan is (and I suspect that is a blessing), but right away I have bad feelings about this. I cannot think of a single cartoon-turned-live-action film that I've enjoyed. Shields up!

(Granted, I've seen precious few movies in my day, but still!)

You've never seen "Sixth Sense", "Unbreakable", "Signs", "The Village" or any of his other flicks? Well I can't say you're missing much. Basically what he does is tells a basically interesting story and then about 9/10's of the way through throws in some big surprising twist that makes everyone gasp aloud. Thing is that works great once or twice, but he does it over and over and over again. That's all he's known for and now he's getting his hands on Avatar...*sigh*

Oh dear goodness, that sounds wretched. Probably these monumental twists occur at the same point in time in each of his movies, too. Ugh.

Can we do a write-in campaign to get a director we like on the project?

By Star Wars he probably means the prequels: i.e. a movie that will be reviled even by the most trenchant fans.
