First and foremost, had a great time with J- who visited for a week and managed to make it home safely yesterday despite some pretty wretched weather pretty much everywhere east of the Sierras. We mostly spent the time hanging out, eating OMG so much pizza (well he did, I just got to smell it...and oh did it smell good), and chatting. It's amazing sometimes how much fun we can have just watching a video together.

I have to say that of all this season's episodes this one was my absolute favorite. Now it might have something to do with the fact that we'd just watched "A Dog's Breakfast" before starting the ep, so we were laughing and happy to start. BTW, ADB is so totally worth watching, seriously, one of the most enjoyable flicks I've seen in a long, long time. If I had to briefly summarize what is great about the film it would be:
1. David playing Rodney if he'd been dropped on his head as a child and turned into a shut-in.
2. David's real life sister playing his perpetually annoyed sis in the film.
3. Paul being utterly adorkable.
4. Paul in drag ('nuff said)
5. David nude scene!
6. Starcrossed, which was just about the funniest scifi parody ever.
7. Christopher-freakin'-Judge cameo.
Seriously, watch this movie.
Anyway, Trio was a wonderfully fun little character piece, which is one of the things this show does well when the writers make an effort. Indeed their character interactions are what make the show really worth watching, and giving three smart characters a puzzle to figure out while spending time actually talking to each other was a brilliant idea.
As J- pointed out the whole thing was very reminscent of a video game in terms of figuring out how the characters were going to escape from peril, and it was cool to see that each character had something to contribute. What was even nicer was that each character was allowed to come up with the wrong answer sometimes, they all made mistakes, and they didn't just leave it up to Rodney to be wrong, wrong, wrong for the sake of comedy. Not that he didn't screw up, and the whole grappling hook fiasco was quite funny and quite him, but it was nice to see Sam mess up big time too. Sometimes we forget she isn't perfect, and watching her go all macho and insist that she could climb up and out despite the ominous creaking of the crates.
What was a little odd, though, was that Jennifer Keller seemed profoundly different from the woman we were introduced to in "Quarantine". The gal who told Ronon the sob story about missing out on all the fun of her teen years a couple of episodes ago is now a veteran of bar bets? Um, sure, ok. Though it was pretty funny to see her as the "coolest" member of the 3.
Some of the moments that were particularly adorable were Rodney's original plan to tie their clothes together in order to make a rope to tie to the grappling hook. Jennifer immediately starts shucking her clothes just as Sam spoils all the fun and finds rope. Rodney's expression was just priceless, oh the eloquent disappointment written on it. When the ladies start tying knots in the rope and playing the "who would you rather sleep with" game I just began chuckling, quite clear on where the game was going to go. Sure, first Rodney sniffs that he's a guy and isn't going to play, then Sam names a couple of physicists that has Jennifer staring at her like she's started talking in Ancient. When Jennifer says "Steve Carrell or Stephen Colbert?" I about lost my shit. Sam, being brilliant, immediately says "Oh definitely Stephen Colbert", then we go to Rodney who opts for Carrell but says he'd toss both aside for Jon Stewart and my hands went into the air as I cried out jubillantly, "For the win!"
I love that Rodney can resist anything but a chance to share his opinion on something. Heh.
The scene where Rodney talks to the gals about his disastrous pseudo-engagement was just wonderful, his cluelessness and clear desire to understand what had happened and Katie's reactions was perfect. He's needed to talk this out with someone and it's pretty clear that he wouldn't be getting much help/advice from John or Ronon on this. The moment where he mumbles something about Katie deserving someone not quite as clueless as himself and Jennifer's immediate defense of him, was the moment I went from "eh" about her to "Oh I like her!"
If I hadn't already had a crush on Rodney, the moment he McGyvered a cannon out of spare parts would've been more than enough to win me over. Cannon = love. I think that may have been the moment that Jennifer was won over too.
Big points to the writers for letting Rodney be all heroic (if bitchy and unhappy about being so) and save the day in the end. His desperation and pain while trying to hang onto Jennifer was so sweet, but the look on his face when Sam told him to leave her and he refused was priceless. Excellent acting on all parts, and it made for a tense, exciting finale.
The last scene in the infirmary was the perfect way to wrap up a great episode, Jennifer demanding the beer she'd clearly earned and Rodney not quite comprehending that she was asking him out. Although I do have to say I had a WTF moment there, I mean she was hitting on him, right? Isn't she dating Ronon? Or does she just go for every guy she ends up trapped with for any period of time? Hmm, this should be quite fascinating as it plays out.

You know people are going to fill in that blank with naughty things if you don't rectify it yourself.
[SPOILERY SGA COMMENTS]
You know, I don't think she was hitting on Rodney at all. I got more of a buddy vibe from her invitation. But maybe it's just that I've started to identify with the character....

Someone asked Joe Mallozzi on his blog about the missing proms/bar hero thing and he answered with something about not going to prom not equaling being friendless or being someone who doesn't go to bars. *shrug*
Well. If you've watched SG1, you're used to Sam screwing up. And I say that with love.
The 'Who would you rather' game struck me as a little silly in that they never gave Rodney the option of, say, two female physicists to sleep with.
Do you know that I totally read the Cannon=love as canon=love the first time? <.<
I was a little confused by the 'have a drink' thing, but JoeM says that Ronon and Keller have not dated since the events in Quarantine. Events, he says, that happened 'months' ago and have not progressed.
I'm really not excited at all over the idea of Keller/McKay.

Date: 2008-02-12 02:13 am (UTC)For all we know, it just was a friend asking a friend out for a drink.
I really like Keller (though that could be carry-over love from Firefly) and think that anyone is better than Katie, but is that enough for a relationship to go on?

Date: 2008-02-12 04:45 am (UTC)Torchood S2 (with the exception of episode two, so nuts that that's the one you saw) has got to be one of the most awesome of all awesome things that were ever awesome. Like, OMG. If you are looking for canon slash, this is the place to go. If you are looking for Gwen Cooper to not talk for the majority of the episode, Episode 1 is for you. Wanna see her have it out with Ryhs AND Captain Jack? Episode Four. Watch Tosh continue to languish away, pining for Owen to realize she exists? EVERY episode! Wanna see Ianto develop a personality and an AMAZING sense of sarcastic humor? EVERY SINGLE EPISODE!!! It is genius. Pure genius. I could not POSSIBLY be happier over the current four episodes (with the exception of Jack's melodrama interrogating the whatsherface in Sleeper, but nothing is perfect).
Also, as far as Keller/Ronon is concerned, I have no idea of what we're supposed to make of this, but for what it's worth....

Date: 2008-02-12 09:17 pm (UTC)For some reason, whenever I load it (and it actually loads) it stops at exactly the same place, about 9 minutes in. You cannot begin to imagine how frustrating this is.
My money would be on Jack too, except that my sister referenced a conversation we had had about Sam/Cam about 2 days before she saw it, so I'm not so sure....
On the other hand, when she first shows up on Atlantis and is unpacking, she does take out a picture of someone in uniform who looks a lot like Jack. So. Much confusion.
Daniel isn't actually/technically with Vala at the end of Unending.
Sam/Janet is a brilliant pairing..
Teal'c is just. No. It's not Teal'c.

Date: 2008-02-12 09:31 pm (UTC)It's really the most believable in my opinion but I'll take Sam/anybody so long as it's not Pete the stalker. My god it's been years and that character still creeps me the hell out. I'll check out your link as soon as I get home, hopefully it'll let me watch more than 9 minutes :)
I bet the ranks were very grateful
