My friend J- made it into town only an hour late yesterday and was in surprisingly good spirits for someone who'd spent the entire day being bounced from airport to airport. I got him a pizza and myself a burrito and we settled in to talk while he watched the remainder of the Super Bowl. He seemed pleased that the Giants won so I was happy for him. Then we found a Stealth lacrosse game on and watched that and talked some more. Finally I had to drag myself off to bed, but not before showing him how the new loveseat bed worked so he could get some sleep as well.

In other news Saturday morning marked the return of me and several of the gals I most like to dance with to veil work. I can't even begin to tell you how wonderful it was to get back to something I love straight down to my toes, though the best part was doing it with some of the best and most enthusiastic dancers I've ever had the privilege of dancing with. We started out just going over the basics then it quickly evolved into an impromptu choreography session with everyone throwing moves together and me supplying the music. We were having so much fun we blew right past the one hour mark and just kept working, then excitedly planned the next class. I already can't wait to go!

In all it turned out to be about what I expected, great for character moments (especially for John, it was a major information dump on a character who's cagey in the extreme about his past and relations) and a really ass-hatted subplot. Par for the course, I know, but at least the character stuff balanced out the stupid so it was fine.

Best scene in the episode goes hands down to John packing for the trip and Rodney coming in to talk to him. I've liked Rodney a lot since season 3, but this was the moment that made me love him. And it made me love the writers a little bit too, they gave him a chance to be an awfully good friend, to have learned from the mistakes he made with Carson and try to do it right this time around. I could just kiss them for putting that scene in instead of making us wonder why the hell Rodney hadn't at least offered to go to John's dad's funeral with him.

And, dude, it was the biggest shoutout to all the McShep slashers in the audience. I could almost feel the fanfic it was going to inspire being written as I watched. And boy did it ever, I highly recommend checking out The Home Front by [livejournal.com profile] aesc, which also includes the greatest double entendre via the phrase "civilian contractor" ever. And yes John's brother David clearly did interpret the phrase to mean "big gay sex toy", when John introduced Ronon in that manner. Then again Ronon in that black shirt and pants was sex on two legs so it's pretty easy to forgive his brother for going there.

Aside from his brother being a dick, and the fact that John comes from almost unbelievable wealth (it's probably best that Rodney didn't see that as he'd have insisted on referring to John as "Your Lordship" from that point forward), I was a little sad that his ex-wife looked like she'd just stepped off a porn shoot. Oh John, seriously? The obviously fake boobs were just the icing on the cake. The boy's taste in women is a sad, sad thing.

The less said about the Replicator plot the better, it was painfully dumb and unnecessary. The episode would've been just fine without it, focusing instead on a nice character study. But lord knows we can't have that! There must be shooting! And deaths! Whatever. I really, really wish the show would take a page out of DS9's book on how to do good scifi and good characters without always having to throw in goofy "excitement".

All in all I'd watch this one again for the John and Rodney scene at the beginning and the stuff at the wake (particularly Ronon decimating the buffet table, which still makes me giggle), but I'd probably fast forward through the rest.

I still like Ronon best, and would like to see this black shirt and pants combo you speak of.

This can be arranged. I also forgot to mention he climbs a ladder at one point and I have to say it was definitely one of the highlights of the season.
