Jan. 28th, 2008 09:41 amSo I went into "Harmony" thinking, "Ok this isn't going to be a memorable episode but it'll probably be cute so just go with it." And indeed that was the perfect attitude, because I ended up rather pleasantly surprised by it. Yes the plot was about as contrived as it could be, and most fanfic writers would've blushed at posting it themselves (unless they were like 14), and Harmony was a Mary Sue of epic proportions, but just set all that aside.
What I liked about the ep is that it was the quintessential Rodney and John buddy show (it kind of reminded me a little of the Hope/Crosby flicks, light, fluffy, and funny). I'm not too keen on the fact that Rodney was all set to pounce a royal hottie the week after he was going to propose to Katie, but letting that go, letting it go. Harmony's crush on John was both predictable and cute, as was her immediate disdain for Rodney. I have to say, though, I expected him to handle the situation slightly better. I mean he does have a little sister with whom he undoubtedly had a similar relationship, surely he had some coping mechanisms.
At any rate, the stolen Powerbar scene was great, though the whole "I don't not like you" conversation just stole my heart. As did Rodney's comment that Harmony was a lot more mature than the women Sheppard usually went for. But the FTW moment had to be Rodney's "I've still got the unner-stay." which had both I and
The big finale was about what I'd expected, though I'm glad they allowed Rodney one of his moments of thoughtless heroism, and Harmony immediately switching her crush over while dissing John just made me squee. The naughty sister got carted off to the thumb screws, a silly portrait was hung on the walls, and a happy ending for all except a slightly pouty John.
All in all not a great ep, but one with some definite moments.
Now I've read some spoilery stuff for next week's ep, supposedly we're finally getting a glimpse into John's family including an older brother and the infamous ex-wife. Very interesting...and Ronon's along as well, oh and there's a human form Replicator. But to be honest I don't really give a rat's ass about the Replicator subplot, it'll undoubtedly involve the Trust and honest to god those people just make me want to bitch slap whatever writer threw them into the mix in the first place.
Should be at least moderately interesting for the insight into John, though, and I'll admit I'm wildly curious about the woman he married.
We got through two episodes last night, including the latest one and the continuing downward spiral of Jimmy McNulty just keeps getting sadder. As Aelf pointed out, you know you're in trouble when Bunk becomes the moral compass of the partnership. I loved Bunk bringing Lester in on Jimmy's lunacy only to have the former decide it was a good plan but could use some improvement. Bunk's very literal WTF moment was just perfect.
Was very glad that the writers remembered Kima and that she does have something of a family even if she threw it away for a while playing the female version of Jimmy. The political Calvinball game that Carcetti's running remains fascinating as well, and I was delighted to see him reach the end of his rope with Burrell, that was a long time coming. Rawls looked a bit queasy about taking over the big chair even if it is only for a few months, which makes me wonder if he's going to end up getting outed in the not too distant future.
Marlo's machinations with the Greek and his beginning steps towards understanding how to play with the big boys led me to believe that Prop Joe wasn't going to last much longer and how right I was. Although it's really obvious that Marlo still has a steep learning curve ahead of him, and I'm not convinced that he understands the Game as well as he thinks he does. Prop Joe ran things in a civilized manner, Marlo's made it clear that he prefers a more "wild west" approach. When he took out Joe and declared war on Omar (and god, poor Butchie!) I think he bit off way more than he can chew. He thinks he's a top level predator, but methinks Omar's going to show him just which shark has the bigger teeth.
On the other hand Omar has a sense of honor, so he may not play quite as dirty as Marlo/Chris/Snoop, but we shall see.
