Holy crap! A Democratic senator who's actually standing up for the rights of the citizens of this country and our Constitution? Do mine eyes deceive me? Please, if I'm dreaming, don't pinch me, I don't want to wake up. Senator Dodd is blocking any FISA bill that includes amnesty for telecoms:

The Military Commissions Act. Warrantless wiretapping. Shredding of Habeas Corpus. Torture. Extraordinary Rendition. Secret Prisons.

No more.

I have decided to place a "hold" on the latest FISA bill that would have included amnesty for telecommunications companies that enabled the President's assault on the Constitution by illegally providing personal information on their customers without judicial authorization.

I said that I would do everything I could to stop this bill from passing, and I have.

It's about delivering results -- and as I've said before, the FIRST thing I will do after being sworn into office is restore the Constitution. But we shouldn't have to wait until then to prevent the further erosion of our country's most treasured document. That's why I am stopping this bill today.

Two words for you: Fuck. Yes.

Give the Senator a little love here, and hell if you can afford it, throw some money his way. It's not every day you get a little of your faith in humanity returned to you, nor faith in the political system and your own party again, and I intend to enjoy it.

I got the same info in an e-mail at work. It took me a while to trust that it was for real ... I mean, a congressperson doing The Right Thing? Given the context of my workplace, everything that's said within the Beltway is received with a certain degree of skepticism. Then I saw it on his website and I said, Hot d@#n. He's a Democrat who's showing signs of a vertebrate structure - possibly even a spine. He deserves some props.

This is the glory, and the horror, of the US Senate: all it takes is one person with adequate testicular (uterine?) fortitude and the whole machine grinds to a halt.

At some point, though, the Ds are going to have to take a week to basically stop everything and call bullshit on the volume of holds and filibusters being promulgated by the minority (easily triple the rate in the last Congress). The reason nothing's getting done is because the Rs are laying on the tracks to prevent GWB having to veto everything in sight, and if Pelosi and Reid had the brains of a first-year grad student in public policy or American, they'd be trumpeting it to the heavens.

Maybe I really should consider a career change...
