I think Gundamhead sums my reaction to the news that the Dems voted with the Republicans to condemn the Petraeus ad beautifully:
Jesus, the Republicans in congress actually spent time debating that “Betray-us” thing? And the Democrats actually voted with them?!? That’s what they think is important right now now?! A fucking newspaper ad?! Fuck them. Just fuck those pathetic little weasels and this fucking two party system. America really is in decline. Just fuckin’ hell. I keep thinking maybe I should move somewhere else…
Although Paddy Mac is making a lot of sense too:
K, so the Senate voted to condemn their critics. Boo hoo. Send ‘em a copy of the Alien and Sedition Act, with a note that they’re a bunch of sissies compared to the Duke of Braintree (whose wife REALLY ran the place!). Mock them viciously; dance in front of their impotent expression of rage, singing “You Can’t Touch This” in your MC Hammer pants. Remark that most of them share a bathroom with Larry Craig.
Most of all, QUIT WHINING, and RESUME SNARKING. We’d be a used-up outpost of the defunct British Empire had Tom Paine not showed his polemical chops. Elmer Davies is ashamed. (And don’t even get me started on what H.L. Mencken would have said.)
Hey, Congress? You don’t like MoveOn? Guess what? MoveOn never liked you! It was “Censure and Move On” back when you couldn’t get your pin-head out of Monica’s thonged butt. You voted against MoveOn? MoveOn’s members get to vote against YOU. Feeling a little scared? Good! Keep acting like Bush’s bitch and you’ll get what you deserve, courtesy of MoveOn and the 60, no wait — 70, no wait — 73% who hate him and his butchery in Iraq.
A-fucking-men.
Update: Good god, just good god-
Senator Jim Webb’s “dwell time” amendment failed yesterday by a vote of 56-44.
…the reason the Webb amendment failed even though it got 56 votes was that Senators agreed by unanimous consent that the amendment should have to get 60 votes to pass, even without a filibuster.
…the question here is not just why anyone would allow it, but why everyone did. A single Senator could have put a stop to this simply by saying, “I object” when the unanimous consent request was made.
…Everyone just politely agreed that 56-44 would be a losing vote for America’s sons and daughters wearing the uniform in Iraq and Afghanistan. And they did it on national television. And America yawned, hit the snooze button, and slept in.
…But hey, since those veto threats are pending, why not just agree to unanimous consent requests in both the House and the Senate that the appropriations bills will require a 2/3 vote to pass? Since they’re going to be vetoed, why not just spare poor President Bush the trouble and the wear and tear on his veto crayon, and agree up front that if a bill doesn’t pass with a veto-proof majority, it shouldn’t be considered passed at all?
…Because that’s the logical extension of what happened yesterday. And the truth is, it makes no less sense.
But it gets better:
Correct me if I’m wrong here. But by my calculation, more U.S. senators (72) voted today to condemn a newspaper ad attacking Gen. Petraeus than voted yesterday (56) to lengthen the time off troops get from the frontlines in Iraq, thereby reducing individual soldiers exposure to actual attacks. Am I missing something, or is that about right?
GAH...just GAH!
