I did something yesterday that I haven't done in a long time, I gave up on a project. I flat out threw my hands into the air and said, "Oh to hell with this." I'm feeling guilty and disappointed in myself, but on a pragmatic level I know very well that trying to force a creative endeavor is a VERY BAD IDEA. This is why I don't do fests, challenges and exchanges for the most part. I just can't rely upon the muse to put out, so to speak, on demand. She's a finicky vixen given to huffy tantrums where she storms off for weeks at a time. And I really just don't have the time or energy to wine and dine her right now.
Fortunately I don't invest a lot of ego points into writing. I've never considered myself a writer, just a dabbler who occasionally strings together a few pleasing words. Now I am an editor, and I do put a lot of stock in that. I suppose some would argue that those who can write, those who can't edit, but I can live with that.
On the plus side it's given me more time to put my house in order and putter in the garden. After yesterday's wind storm I needed it, you wouldn't believe the mess. Also I'm being invaded by very fertile snails. Snail babies everywhere. I feel a little bad about ending their lives so early, but only a little. Hey they invaded me, not the other way around. They shall learn that crossing my border leads to an untimely demise. Oh yes, this does indeed mean war.
