Had a mostly nice quiet weekend, with the exception of my birthday dinner Friday night. I love Shabuway and always have a great time (it's like dinner and a spa treatment all in one!) but trying to hold a conversation with anyone sitting more than one seat away from you is impossible. And because of the nature of the meal vegetarians had to be strictly segregated from the omnivores. There is also the blaring J-pop to deal with. But oh the food is so amazing and the atmosphere is fun...and well boiling your own food and eating it really is far more enjoyable than it might sound. :)

Saturday was costume completion day after meeting up with [livejournal.com profile] moonlightnrain and [livejournal.com profile] tersa for breakfast. Aelf and I hit a couple of costume shops and I found the perfect wig for Bellatrix, which completes the ensemble. Then we went to the Salvation Army and walked away with some clothing and costume bits. [livejournal.com profile] cyranocyrano, if you're still interested in doing Gene Hunt for the party we've found your tie.

Sunday was farmer's market, then off to Qigong class which I'm still very much enjoying. I don't feel like I've mastered anything yet but the chi work we did this time around was just amazing. There's nothing like leaving a class buzzing with energy, but not the hyperactive kind, a well grounded, low-key variety. Then I zoomed up to [livejournal.com profile] elo_sf's for Doctor Who, which left me asking just one question...

I mean seriously, I stopped watching episodes after the horror that was the two part Dalek ep this season, and just relied upon others to tell me what happened in later eps. Fortunately [livejournal.com profile] elo_sf was able to explain the significance in this one of the watch, and that was really all I needed to know about that. Of course I'd watch anything with Derek Jacobi in it, but when I figured out who he was I couldn't help squeeing with delight.

I can't even describe how lovely it was to have Captain Jack back, the real one, not that ass who's been "leading" Torchwood. I liked how both the writing and the acting made it unclear about just what Jack wanted from the Doctor. Did he act so desperately because he wanted to end his immortality, or because the Doctor is the love of his life? Everything was kept just ambiguous enough to let the viewer fill in their own blanks.

Of course there were also plot holes the size of small galaxies, didn't Jack hop on board the TARDIS inside the Torchwood headquarters in the last episode of that series? So now he did it outside and just above the offices. Um, what? And the whole Jack immortality thing made little to no sense as it was, for instance if the Time Lords could give themselves that kind of invulnerability/immortality instead of just using regeneration to stay alive, why wouldn't they? I mean one or two such dudes at least to help in the fight against the Daleks would've changed the course of the Time Wars. And how come Jack could get shot and "killed" but not vaporized by the intense radiation? Shouldn't he at least have gotten somewhat crispy? And the Doctor's explanation for why he'd been avoiding him left a lot to be desired. Indeed it made me sit there muttering, "What a dick!"

Still don't care about Martha, I just really don't. The whole hopeless love thing is just starting to grate on my nerves. I want to shake her and scream, "He's just not that into you!" My only hope is that she'll develop a backbone and get the hell away from him soon.

But setting all that aside Derek was fantastic and I loved how they masked the sounds he kept hearing in his head so you couldn't tell they were a TARDIS engine until he began to remember who and what he was. Also the quotes were a fun shoutout to the fans, I'd love to see a rundown on all the episodes referenced. And watching him go from befuddled, sweet Professor Yana to the Master was pure joy. However, how in the name of all that's holy did he get the ability to regenerate again? Wasn't it kind of the whole raison d'etre of the character that he was out of regenerations and yet wanted to keep on living so he did every evil, vile thing he could to do maintain his existence. Oh and are we also trying to say that he'd have passed on the whole phenomenal cosmic powers/immortality/invulnerability thing that comes from mainlining the TARDIS energies? Sure, right.

The transformation into John Simm almost made me too happy, all I can say is OMG yum! I loved the Doctor trying to appeal to his better nature, "Hey c'mon buddy, we're the last two of our kind, let's not quibble about who killed who and let bygones be bygones, what do you say?" And then the Master basically responding with a giddy, "Fuck you very much!" before taking off with the TARDIS. And, um, his "Say my name, bitch" moment also made me a little too happy. I'm definitely going to have to watch this one again...privately.

Oh lord do I need to find me some Doctor/Master slash. Hoo-boy.

Can't wait to see what the Master/Mr. Saxon gets up to in the final two episodes.

Oi, the entire season wasn't dreck. A lot of it was, to be sure, but The twoparter with the watch was good and Blink, the episode before Utopia, was bloody brilliant. Utopia, though, was awesome, although the Futurekind looked pretty dumb.

In other news, that icon is incredible.
