This I just had to share, everyone who has experienced or will soon again experience academia will appreciate it:

Most outrageous note evar.

After a long day of teaching, answering all kinds of last-minute student concerns about the semester, which is wrapping up next week, I came back to the English office to find the following note in my inbox:

'Dear Prof. AWB,

I was in your British Literature class in the fall of 2006, and for that class, you gave me a grade of C. I need to have a better grade for this class. As far as I know, I got an 86 on the first paper, and I didn’t complete the second assignment. I don’t know what I got on the final essay or exam.

I would like for you to change my grade to at least a B. If this means I must complete the second assignment, I will attempt to set aside time to do so. Please address this matter immediately.

Thank you,

Most Ridiculous Student Of All Time [MRS. OAT]'

My people: this student finished the course fully five months ago. The assignment was due seven months ago. She didn’t take an extension or explain why it wasn’t done; she didn’t question the grade in December. I had forgotten she ever existed.

I am… I don’t know what I am. Baffled? Horrified? Insulted?

The obvious and immediate response I thought of was a long letter detailing the ways in which this note is insulting to me as a teacher, to our department, and, worst of all, to her classmates. But another part of me just wants to annoy her by responding five months from now, or probably not at all.

Frankly I'd never have the balls in this lifetime to try a stunt like this when I was in school, but maybe the times are a'changin' and I'm just out of date.

I think my favourite part was this: "I will attempt to set aside time to do so."

Wow...I mean...just...WOW! That's pretty priceless. How are you gonna answer??

(I've been out of university for 10 years...I'm going to pull out my grades, see what my lowest one was, and ask for a higher one. *snicker*)

I like the idea of waiting 5 months to respond, hey if she's not giving you any respect why respect her? But honestly if I'd tried this even as an undergrad I'd have been laughed out of the professor's office. And I valued my ass too much to even think about it in grad school.

Methinks that MRSOAT is one of those rare and speshul snowflakes (ie, entitlist morons) who's in for a nasty wake-up call, any minute now...
