My favorite summation of real versus fictional Spartans:

As I've noted elsewhere, I just enjoy the spectacle of wingers singing the praises of a society that was like a heavily armed NAMBLA convention with a bad attitude.

Although this mini-review of The 300 definitely confirms that I need to see the movie:

If they do a remake of Flash Gordon, Gerard Butler would be an excellent King of the Hawkmen. "300" is essentially him bellowing the equivalent of "Onward, my brave Hawkmen!!" over and over, as he leads his force of courageous underwear models against a titanic force of Lord of the Rings outakes, led by a 70s glam-rocker.

It's actually pretty enjoyable, in it's cartoony way.

Check out how the wingnuts are attempting to claim the film as the ultimate pro-war propaganda here: Hey Joey, Do You Like Movies About Gladiators?

... and no-one saw that coming. No, not me - certainly not me. *sigh*

I just have to laugh at the mental gymnastics, I mean a world superpower invades a small, nearly defensely country and the natives of said country fight like hell against impossible odds. And somehow, somehow the wingnuts manage to cast themselves as the Spartans. Wow, I mean that's gold metal material there.

Oh, come now - it's an easy and perfectly consistent leap for them.

Fear of a Brown (Persian/Muslim) Planet threatening the Cradle of (implicitly Christian) Western Civilization in Ancient Greece, militarism and warrior-cultism writ large (and dumb) - seriously, I don't even have to read the link to come up with this crap.

Of course it's a terrible misreading of history, a paranoid fantasy-piece, and large-scale ho-yay, but has that ever impeded the fevered brows we know so well? No, of course not.

Half of Jeff Guckert's appeal in the nether realms of the White House was that he's a BIG GAY (ex-)SOLDIER-BOY (hell, maybe all of his appeal). What's 300 but lots and lots and lots of Jeff-Guckert-ly fan-service? (I've been told there's more to it than that, but I'm afraid of the high nausea-induction factor and don't plan to find out.)

Foucault would have a field day with this movie, would he not?

To be honest I'm half tempted to dig out my college Freud and take a stab at the whole thing but these people just aren't worth the time and effort.

Go see "300". If you don't like it you probably hate America. That, or you're gay.

Hunh. I'd heard there were leather speedos and rock hard six pack abs. I'd say that if you *like* this movie you probably hate America or you're gay. But I haven't seen it yet, or read a Frank Miller comic.

It's sort of the ultimate ode to the hardcore closet case from what I can see.

*snort*

But thank you for reminding me, I really need a Flash Gordon icon. :)
