You know after I saw that dumbass "The Village" flick I had the overwhelming urge to kick M. Night Shyamalan in the nuts, but when I read this I came to the realization that I could settle for nothing less than beating him soundly with a baseball bat. Oh my god he's going to fuck this up so very, very badly:

Shyamalan Readies Own Avatar

M. Night Shyamalan and Paramount are planning their own Avatar, a movie based on the popular Nickelodeon kids' TV series, Variety reported.

The filmmaker has signed a three-picture deal with Paramount's MTV Films and Nick Movies to adapt the animated Avatar: The Last Airbender show for the big screen. He will write, direct and produce the potential kids' franchise. The film version will be live action.

Nick TV's Avatar, which is set in an Asian-influenced fantasy world permeated by martial arts and magic, follows the adventures of the successor to a long line of Avatars who must put aside his irresponsible ways and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations.

Created by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, Avatar debuted on the Nicktoons lineup in February 2005. Aimed at 6- to 11-year-olds, the show has nabbed strong ratings, including some outside this intended demo. It is among the top 10 animated series on all of TV among kids 6-11 and tweens 9-14.

Paramount confirmed the pact with Shyamalan just hours after Fox Filmed Entertainment announced it is green-lighting James Cameron's Avatar, which has nothing to do with the Airbender project.

Ok, they're fucking over the Dragonlance series, right, whatever, but Shyamalan, you keep your dirty fucking hands off Avatar, you bastard! If anybody's going to bring it to life it should bloody well be Woo-ping Yuen, preferably with a bunch of talented young up and coming Asian martial arts stars. Oh yes, sweet Jesus, I could die a happy woman if that happened.

Yeah, I was waiting to break this to you once you had your strength back.... Personally, I don't want to see it go the live action route at all, but the addition of Shyamalan made me throw up in my mouth just a little. The three-picture deal part made me weep.

I suppose it's too late for a letter writing campaign?

Sadly much too late, at least if it had gone live action with an HK cast and crew it would've been mildly entertaining *sigh*

It is frustrating to see things you consider iconic put in the hands of someone who long ago squandered what little talent they possessed.

I'm just wondering what half-assed crap-tastic "surprise" twist he's going to try to tack onto them.

I think Tsui Hark might be an interesting choice, but I think that casting is far more important. Remember how many different projects that never saw the light of day after they were announced so don't start to get upset until you see a trailer and release date. john

Oh sweet baby jesus...Shamalamading-dong is going to make a big steaming pile of poo out of this I just know it. Why in the name of the four nations are they doing this live-action? An animated flick would be much, much, much better. And dear gods...if he casts any up and coming, pouty, talentless Hollywood "it" people I will call the gods unholy wrath down upon his head. I am having truly frightening visions of someone like Jessica Simpson playing Katara. Must...breathe...deep breaths...

I'm less worried about the casting than what he'll feel he needs to do to the story to make it his, you know?

Yes, that could be troublesome to say the least...Oh I hope the creators of the show have had the sense to retain some creative control over the movie...
