Always together

The season opener kicked my ass on a variety of levels, both as social commentary about our own current events as well as the continuation of a wonderful plot and amazing characters this show won me over with to begin with.
Only one complaint, please, please Dear Lady, let the writers work in a way for Lee to lose all that excess weight soon. I know, I know there's way more going for this show than the eye candy that was Jamie Bamber's perfectly sculpted body...still. I'm pining for the towel, here...
Ok, one more minor complaint, way too little Starbuck for my taste, but what we got was sweet. Watching her start out as a cringing victim in the first sequence with the psycho stalker Cylon Leoban, I got a little nervous. Where was my hard drinking, hard hitting fly-girl? Where was my devil may care space cowgirl? Within seconds she reappeared with a vengence, bless her heart, and with a wicked tuning fork. At least I think it was a tuning fork. The entire time she's faking out Leo regarding the knife she's got her weapon hidden under the table and she struck with the viciousness and determination I'd come to expect from her. No hesitation, no remorse, just sheer, bloody-minded violence against her creepy jailer. When he manages to gurgle that he'll see her soon and she hisses, "Take your time." I swear I could feel little animated hearts bursting over my head.
I was forced to wonder the whole time, how many Leos has she killed since he started keeping her prisoner? Quite a few would be my guess. I didn't buy into the whole Kasey sub-plot either (the math just doesn't work out), and it seemed entirely too obvious to me that Kara was playing along to make Leo think she'd fallen under some sort of maternal spell. As far as I'm concerned she was just wondering who to take out with the tuning fork first.
Ok the second episode brings us a new favorite minor character alert, the somewhat crazy Pythia in the temple that Number 3 (Lucy Lawless) went to visit. I knew immediately who and what she was and gave a delighted little squee over the temple set-up. Though why she's ratting out on Hera I'd love to know...just what are the gods up to in leaking that, we wonder...
Loving shaved Tyrol, and his rescue of Cally made me so desperately happy.
It was nice to see Lee and his dad making nice before they split up. I do think Lee was right to insist on taking one of the battlestars off to protect the remaining civilian fleet rather than leading both into battle for New Caprica. He's absolutely right about that"Don't make me cry on my own hanger deck." Aw, Adama is such a softie.
Ah poor Ellen, all her conniving comes home to roost as her treachery gets revealed. Poor Saul, he's going to be so broken yet again, and he's already lost more than most. Yeah, poor Saul goes snap, poor, poor bastard.
Gods it was nice to see Laura back in command again, I've missed her so. I loved her response to the question about civilian panic, people know they're going to have to take responsibility for their own safety and she's not concerned about their ability to handle themselves. Now there's a pragmatic and worthy leader.
Watching Sharon in action has been a joy. Watching her shoot 3 in the legs...even better. "Adama wouldn't lie to me." Oh Sharon you're going to be so disappointed when you find out the truth...so disappointed.
I've got to say that Adama back on the bridge flying off to rescue his people gave me chills. He's the kind of commander I'd follow against three cylon base ships, no question about it. Argh, why must this show be only one mere hour long? Last week's two hour premiere spoiled me I'm afraid.
Eek, scenes for next week include Gaeta pulling a gun on Baltar (jeez, what the hell is Gaius going to do when the calvary shows up?), had to see that coming. I'm not sure Gaeta's going to be welcomed back into the fleet himself, he's been identified as a collaborator despite the fact that he's been the insurgent's "Deep Throat" this whole time. I want Gaeta to return, though, he's a damn fine officer and a decent man...unlike Gaius. Don't get me wrong, I love Baltar, but he is definitely not a good man, he's a flawed one, borderline sociopathic as well, lacking in empathy, personal responsibility and inner strength. The trick to adoring him is similar to that of loving Severus Snape, don't try to make him a good guy, let him be who he is, glorious flaws and all.
But the scenes with Kara freaking out of Kasey have me worried. Please, please, please don't turn her into some mommy wanna-be who's brain is going to turn to complete mush when presented with a cute blonde toddler. I've gotta' hold onto my faith in Ron Moore, he managed to maintain Kira Nerys' edge even while pregnant, so I've gotta' believe he's not going to let me down where Kara is concerned. But how on earth (er, New Caprica, I guess) is Kara going to escape Creepy Guy and get back to the fleet? Nobody even knows where she is...

2) If the kid is a hybrid
Not buying it. Sharon Agathon was pregnant before Starbuck was kidnapped and ended up in The Farm. We've seen Kacey, and we've seen Hera. Kacey is HUGE compared to Hera. Hera looks about a year and a half old. Kacey looks twice her age. I'm not saying that's -impossible- (I know a kid who's about 18 months and is about the size of a 3 year old... but he doesn't have the coordination of a 3 year old), I'm just saying it's really damned unlikely.
I suspect Kara's attitude towards the kid is that the kid is in much the same situation she herself is in - she's being used in plots not of her own making. And Kara does have a soft spot, I can't see her leaving a kid to suffer when she can do something about it - her child or not.

Date: 2006-10-16 03:47 pm (UTC)I do agree, though, that she often thinks with her heart and will even disobey a direct order if she feels it's wrong. I just don't want her to be trying to save the kid because the writers think all women go mushy/maternal at the drop of a hat. I want them to do a better job than that and maintain the level of depth and honesty with which they've written her so far. I guess I've just seen too many female characters written off this way and I'm terrified Ron's going to let them do it to Kara. I guess I shouldn't be 'cause he never failed me on Kira, but still...
