Right. I've officially had it with my hair. It's a pain in the ass, ends up everywhere, I shed worse than the cats, and no matter how much conditioner I use it's still frizzy and all over the place. I need to cut it off, seriously. I just have no idea what to do with it and I don't know of a good hairdresser who could help me decide on something.

Any suggestions?

I think one of those new-fangled Flapper Girl haircuts would look good on you.

I think I want something a bit longer than that. Those kinds of hair styles tend to need a lot of upkeep as well, and I'm *so* not the upkeep type.

Was thinking "oh, come on, Ellie doesn't shed nearly as much as I do." Then I went to put my laptop in my bag and found, stuck to the velcro, a long, very blonde hair. :) I'd recommend Frank, but something tells me you're not looking for the $14 guy who never asks personal questions (mostly because his English is only so-so, I suspect, but you know how much I appreciate it). However, a more helpful recommendation might be to look through your photo albums for older haircuts that you liked on yourself. From that point you can modify to make them more current, but that should at least give you a good idea of where you want your hair to fall.

And if I don't like any of my previous haircuts?

Nope. I think the really short one worked when I was 10 pounds lighter, but I don't think it would look terribly good on me now. And even then it was only on certain days from certain angles and in certain light. Otherwise it just looked like crap. Crap that I couldn't do anything with :(

Well, what about the medium length, like the one in the photo with Laurie on your fridge, or the one of you and your mom?

That may be what I go for out of sheer desperation, yeah. Long enough to pull it back but not long enough to get caught in everything.

I'm sorry I can't be more helpful. The truth of the matter is I think you look fabulous with any length. :)

I'm glad you think so. It was an attempt to use my world famous sardonic humor to deal with the fact that I think I look like a dork with my new durable medical goods, and I really don't need a lot of help in that direction. (:

There are loads of internet sites with hairstyle pictures - copy out the ones you like into a Word doc, then print it and take it with you to a stylist. I do that "I want these bangs, but with this styling in the back" or whatever. As for finding a stylist, ask people you know who have haircuts that look good if they can recommend their stylist.

Must be a dissatisfied-with-hair day today - I just posted that I'm gonna cut mine this weekend to give myself bangs again. I haven't been in to get mine cut properly in almost two years now ... I hate being on such a tight budget.

Last night I stood in front of the mirror picturing all those movie scenes where the girl goes in, chops off all her hair and walks out looking fabulous. I suspect if I tried that I'd look like I fed my head into a wood chipper.

Heh, have you ever read Charles de Lint's "Jack of Kinrowan" series? The first novella has a girl who has long straight hair and does that ... and ends up with what is from then-on referred to as "corn patch stubble"

The movies lie. I still can't get over Keira Knightly-as-Elizabeth sitting in the rain on her wedding day and then running under cover when Will is brought in in chains and she looks mildly damp and totally wonderful. As if.

I will again recommend Dora over at Shear Image. She has yet to steer me wrong.

It's on ECR at the corner of Calderon, across the street from the Jack in the Box.

There's my person in Berkeley, who, a few years back, when I said, "I want to do something different," handed me a style book. I cringed inwardly, because I suck at picking them out, but I started to open one, and she took it from my hands, flipped to a page, and said, "This, no bangs," and I said, "Yeah, okay." I've been going back to her (although never as often as I should) ever since. Not that you want to come this far for an under-$15 haircut.

I have a LOT of very fine hair that is quite prone to static. While I was living in AZ, a friend told me how Mexican women prevent their hair from getting static-y: they treat it with Downy liquid fabric softener. Once every two weeks you're to soak it for 2 hours, then rinse it out.

Me, I soak mine for 30 minutes maybe once a week/two weeks, and that does the trick for me.

PS: Very, VERY important to sniff-test this first, because you WILL be smelling it for hours after the treatment, even if you go for my 30-minute version...
