Weekend in review:

1) Dance time, woo!

2) A partial reunion of the 2006 San Jose Sharks Quidditch team which ran into the wee hours of the morning and was delightful.

3) I'm not talking about X3 any more, read my last post if you want my thoughts on the subject.

4) Snakes on a Plane trailer!

5) Non-spoilery Dr. Who squee-age here (but there may be spoilers in comments so tread carefully), wasn't terribly thrilled with "Idiot's Lanter", but "The Impossible Planet" more than made up for it. This two-parter is likely to blow "Rise of the Cybermen" right out of the water. Quality script, great moments, strong concept, incredible effects, and it definitely harkens back to the classic just-this-side-of-horror eps like "Arc in Space" and "Robots of Death". Cannot say enough good things about the episode and OMG I can't wait for the second part!

What amused me and Steve about that episode was all the references to British TV shows that I have no idea how many people got. Like the stylists being Trinny and Susannah from the British "What not to Wear" (including a titty grab! woo!) and the reference to so many shows including Ground Force, which I love. We were laughing out loud. :)

Oh you mean "Bad Wolf" from the last series, yeah that one was a hoot. I'm currently more than halfway through the next series with the Tenth Doctor, which is why I'm trying very hard not to be too spoilery ;)

Heh, well two series actually, Dr. Who and shortly the new Captain Jack-centric one "Torchwood". This season's episodes are building up the whole "Torchwood" mystery quite nicely, it's kind of this season's "Bad Wolf"...or at least one of the equivalents. When you finish 9 and decide you want 10 lemme know, and I'll see what I can do to hook you up :)

I'm so very confused. Forgive me, I only just started watching the new Dr. Who as it is (late in the season) ...

... so are you watching 10 before it's being released to SciFi? Is that what you mean? And I take it there's a new actor for the doctor?

And a Captain Jack series all of his own. Oh dear. My head whimpers at the idea, while finding it strangely compelling.

Sorry if I should know all this already from everyone's posts. I seriously only started watching the new Dr. Who about five eps ago, and we missed one in there as it was (stupid TIVO overwrote it!) ...

The newest series is currently being aired in the UK, thankfully there are many kind folks over there willing to share with us less fortunate ones so I'm basically watching them the day after they air there. SciFi will hopefully acquire this series as well, since the Eccleston Doctor (the one they're airing for you) is wildly popular.

And yes there's a new Doctor, if you look at my icon at the top of the page you'll see him and Jackie together in one of my favorite scenes from the first ep, "The Christmas Invasion".

Happily I'm sure they'll be replaying them this summer so you can get caught up. Have you ever seen any of the older series? It's been running on the BBC since the mid-60's.

And yes, I grew up watching Dr. Who, although not as much of it as original Star Trek. I came on board in the Tom Baker years, so despite how many actors there where, he and his scarf are "the real" Dr. Who to me (and yes, I know that makes many people cringe. Cope! *grin*)

Sadly Eccleston decided to leave after only one season. I really liked his take on the Doctor, the fact that he is the most broken and emotionally accessible to date was fascinating to watch. And his relationship with Rose was so utterly unlike anything in the series prior to that, that I found it just wonderful.

But do give Tennant a try, his Doctor is healed and whole and a lot closer to the more classic version of the Doctor most of us grew up with.

Oh I gew up with Tom as well, and was less than thrilled with Peter Davidson and Colin Baker, though I did enjoy Sylvester McCoy quite a bit. The less said about the movie Doctor, the better (though he's apparently canon now). Eccleston is fantastic and Tennant is just superb.

BTW, not too spoilerish, but in this series there's a fantastic ep called "School Reunion" which brings back Sarah Jane Smith from the Baker days. She's just marvelous, and watching her, the Doctor and Rose interact is a real treat.

I am of the opinion that whichever Doctor you first saw is the "real" doctor, and since Baker is (a) the most likely one for PBS locals to have bought episodes of and (b) the one with the most episodes, I am not surprized that he is the "real" doctor for most people. I have the same issues with the "real" Romana.

That was my *first* issue with the not-real Romana. (: That, and Mary Tamm was smarter, hipper, sexier and less of a 'What does that do Doctor?' companion. Which is probably what killed her off--with nobody he had to explain things to, there was no exposition-ready source to tell the audience at home who this alien race was or what the history of this planet was.
