Damn this sounds interesting:
East Meets West
Apparently it's a bellydance event that merged the ancient eastern dance form with the modern American culture. Of particular note to
technocowboy:
Some highlights:
a 1920's themed routine to 'Istanbul (not constantinople)' It was set in a bar with the bellydancer as the entertainment for the night. Throughout her routine, a middle aged man in a tux drooled slack jawed whilst his frumpy wife alternated between trying to strangle him, trying to strangle the bellydancer, and trying to block his view of the show.
And of particular note to me:
My instructor doing what was pretty close to a traditional five part routine... except entirely to beatles music including ringo starr's only recorded drum solo.
Jeez I wish I could've been there, it sounded way cool.
Anyway, weekend update time.
Friday night was dinner with
elo_sf and the usual gang at Aya Sushi. Yum! Felt like I hadn't seen them in ages, having gaming on Friday nights is making things a little more complicated on the social front, but I'm adaptable. Dinner was great, and we made plans to see one another again on Sunday afternoon so I was well pleased with this. Got home and watched some episodes of Lain, which was one of the stranger anime series I've ever encountered. And that's saying something. But definitely pretty. Got my laundry done (go me!) and then crashed for the evening.
Up bright and early on Saturday and called around a few places to see about getting a quote. Discovered very quickly that Saturdays are not a good day to do this sort of thing and subsequently gave up and went up to SF with
aelfsciene and
jakejr to find Lush. I know there are quite a few converts to the Church of Lush out there, but I feel it my duty to tell you all that you haven't truly experienced the glory that is Lush until you've been there. I got some of the Bio Fresh body scrub (not available via mail order) in the "More than Mortal" scent. It is, indeed, divine. And the Veganese hair conditioner is the best stuff I've ever used in my life. My hair looks and smells amazing! Picked up a few gifts for friends as well and got out without spending more than $100...which for me is an amazing show of restraint. I've discovered I really like the Karma line and that Lush has gift certificates. If anyone ever wonders what to get me as a gift, I point them in that direction.
Came home and was delighted to be invited to the symphony with
mallen! Rostapovich was conducting Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8. Try saying that 3 times fast. It was transcendent, so much so that the entire audience ended up sitting there in complete silence for a few seconds before bursting into enthusiastic applause. It was the kind of performance that leaves you feeling a bit drained, as if you've run the emotional gamut and you don't quite know how you're supposed to feel. We then went over to Max's Opera Cafe and I valiantly resisted the dessert menu. I silently repeated, "Belly dance costumes and THE DRESS." until the urge passed. I could not, however, resist the temptation of strawberry lemonade. I think I know just how to replicate this amazing beverage and it will undoubtedly be served at upcoming events.
I then went home and watched a little t.v. before crashing for the evening, and I do mean crashing. I didn't pull my lazy ass out of bed until about 11:30 on Sunday morning. But honestly, how could I with an adorable cat snuggled up under the covers with me? Later I also resisted the urge to hit Lunatic Fringe as I'd spent far too much money at Lush the day before to be able to justify another penny. Aelf came home and we went through some dance numbers together before I showered and headed over to
elo_sf's for several episodes of "Coupling". Now that is one hilarious British series. "Lesbian Spank Inferno" indeed. *G*
Home again and I was working on some crocheting and watching "Sakura Wars" on the local PBS channel with a lap full of kitty, then off to bed myself.
So not a terribly exciting or productive weekend, but that's nice once in a while, you know? Class tonight, then Thursday, and Sunday too so I'll be getting back into the swing of things. Hope my knee holds out this week...
