Well, a fairly pretty one anyway, though I'm hoping it clears up nicely later on. Might take another walk today, or just curl up with Sue's copy of "Biological Exuberance" for lunch. Depends how lazy I'm feeling by noontime.

Woke up super early this morning (5 a.m.) and kind of dozed 'til just before 7. I've gotten used to the rising sun waking me up in the mornings and it was too cloudy to do that today. I'm alarmingly awake, though, which may be due to being slightly bouncy about my dinner plans tonight. I've never had Cuban before and I don't get to spend nearly enough time with mallen as I'd like. It will definitely be fun.

And the Sharks won decisively last night (though the last few minutes had a few of us nearly hyperventillating), which means they could finish up the first round tomorrow on home ice. I imagine Sue and I will be practically beside ourselves all evening long, and I pity our poor neighbors that night. I'm edging ever nearer to that Marleau jersey...must...resist.

Oh, and it looks like I'm pretty much definitely moving in July so the white water rafting trip may have to remain a dream for this year. If the rest of you guys still want to go, please do with my blessing (and a request for pics and stories when you return!), but I think I'll need the time and money for this. If anyone knows a really good way to find a decently priced house to rent (two or three bedrooms) let me know. The actual hunt begins in June.

I have had amazingly good luck with metro-rents both times I have had to go apartment or house searching in the area.

They're decently inexpensive (about $90 for three months of service). You give them an email or fax number and they send you a code number for the web page and updates on houses that fit your specific criteria every monday, wednesday and friday.

And when I mean specific criteria, I'm serious. We requested House,4+ bedrooms, pets, yard, and a few specific locations and a price and that's what they sent us. And as a result we have our lovely house which was better than we had hoped for. I really liked being able to talk to them on the phone and give them specifics of what we -did not- want and not have those things show up in the listing. I didn't have tobother with houses that were too small, or didn't take pets or stuff like that.

So anyways, www.metrorent.com they have a nice beginning search function on their webpage so you can sort of try them out. I also found that house listers were pleased to find out you were from metro-rent. I know our lease went through amazingly quickly.

Also, if you don't find a place through them, they will refund at least $75 of the fee. I highly recommend ordering two months before you plan on moving, to give you a general idea f what is in your neighborhood.

Oooh, Biological Exuberance, I've been wanting to read that. It sounds fascinating.

So far it's quite interesting, though a bit on the dry side. I kind of feel like I should be in a class while I'm reading it...

white water rafting can happen...

The last two places I found was via the SJ Mercury Classifieds and craigslist, respectively. I've actually not had much luck with metro-rent or its ilk. The one time I used it, I found out most of the posts they'd given me were out of date (the places they said were available actually weren't).

You may have better luck with them now that the housing market is on the renter's side.

I'll keep an eye out. We found our house through word-of-mouth, and I've heard of a few other houses the same way. Not very scientific, but when it works, it is great. Most of the houses I hear about are either in our neighborhood or in Palo Alto, so let me know if that is appealing.
