A little non-spoilery HP geeking, [livejournal.com profile] tersa points to some fantastic costumes at a book release party here. Go take a look, they're adorable, and the Harry is almost scary good. The dueling with Draco picture makes me laugh and laugh.

Right, went back through OotP, and sure enough while the Weasleys and Harry are cleaning out Grimmauld place one of the things they come across is a heavy locket that none of them can open. OMG, if that's the real Horcrux and if Mundugus pawned it off I am going to squeal like a little schoolgirl in the next book. That is just too beautiful. And cheers to Regulus for majorly screwing over the Dark Lord, you go boy!

Just goes to show, in these books take nothing for granted, which if you'll recall was similar to what Snape was telling Dumbledore during their argument. My mantra for now is "There are still plenty of movies to tide you over until the next book", it is not working so well, I'm sorry to say.

I've been tooling around the various HP groups and communities and am pleased to note that my own favorite, [livejournal.com profile] lupin_snape, hasn't descended into a lot of anti-Tonks nonsense just because canon is stepping on the toes of our slash fandom. That was a huge relief, because it seems to me that even with a canon relationship to work around, we're clever enough fangirls to do it and do it with style. It just makes the whole Snupin venture that much more challenging, and I do so love a challenge.

I also rather like different pairings if for nothing else than a bit of novelty, and I'm finding myself re-reading some NT/RL (which was actually the pairing I read ages ago that got me into Lupin in the first place) and even checking out LE/SS (and I highly recommend [livejournal.com profile] pandarus's work, particularly Requited and it's follow up snippet, actually just go to her last week of posts and find more, lots more to enjoy. I'm not entirely sure I buy into Snape and Lily ever actually dating, particularly as I was the mood, unattractive, ill-socialized outcast with bad hair in my own school and I sure as shit never ended up with either the prom king or queen, even briefly. No, I tend to think that he cared for her and that she showed him a modicum of decency and kindness and that was as far as it ever went. But that, to me, is enough really, to explain why he would turn to the good side after realizing that the Dark Lord was about to kill her, or had already done so. James he didn't give a shit about, but Lily...

Also I have to quote [livejournal.com profile] pandarus's take on Snape here, 'cause it so completely matches my own (only she says it way better than I could):

He is bitter as week-old coffee grounds, pricklier than a bed full of porcupines and he definitely subscribes to the 'attack is the best form of defence' school of thought. These do not make for a particularly likeable person. But I do find that Canon!Snape is now my favourite character in the HP universe.

He isn’t kind, he isn’t generous, he isn’t physically attractive (yes, I know Alan Rickman is, but Book!Snape isn’t), he is mean-spirited, he is petty, he is emotionally immature, he is vindictive. He is not, in short, a particularly likeable chap, and I can perfectly understand readers who *don’t* fangirl Snape. In fact, I think this is a perfectly reasonable response. More so than falling for a Byronic ideal of Snapean Loveliness...

Still, I can't help feeling compassion for him, that he is so damaged. And, okay, I'm trying to avoid the word woobie, because it's so reductive, but also I can't think of another word with quite those connotations. His very aggression and bitterness is a kind of painful vulnerability that makes me want to make it better, somehow. And, what's more, he does good. He isn't nice, but he does good things. He makes Lupin his potion, he protects the children in his care, when they really do need protecting. He's very flawed, and he's damaging his students in a lot of small, lasting ways, but he's someone who would unthinkingly place himself between them and direct attack, and has done. That counts for something. It isn't everything, but it's enough to make me give a damn about him.
[...]
What about Snape? Why is it that I’m so fond of him?

And what it is, I think, is that what I find attractive in another person? Whether real or fictional? Intelligence. Passion. Wit. Those are my buttons right there. Add integrity and reluctant heroism, ruthlessness and a way with words, and, damn. Hello crush, goodbye dignity.

Amen, sister, amen.

In other news, I failed my exercise roll (so close!) last night, but my efforts to cut back on my fat intake (I'm allowing myself 25% of my total calorie intake) seems to be starting to pay off. Slowly the weight is starting to move back towards my normal range and I'm feeling less lethargic. Dancing hard in class and keeping active outside it (housework is definitely aerobic), will also help a lot, and now that we're moving closer and closer to DDF I will definitely be doing more dancing. Will try to get to class tonight, here's hoping traffic won't be as insane as it was on Tuesday.

And, oh! reminded: I think I want to approach Books Inc. when Book 7 has an announced date offering to organize/run their book party next time.

If they were smart they'd let the fans run it or at least have a say in what happens. If not maybe we can declare a seperate party at a local coffee house or something and amuse ourselves before picking up the books?

I would hate to compete with them, but yeah, if they refuse assistance, I would love to try to organize another one.

Maybe we can amuse ourselves the next year or two until Book 7 comes out by coming up with some games geared for both children *and* adult fans? Especially the trivia contest. And thinking up appropriate prizes for both. Although the Books Inc one was fun, I was a little disappointed that it was so kids oriented and failed to acknowledge the adult fans.
