Apr. 11th, 2005 09:03 amBusy weekend, but productive, which is my favorite kind. Friday night I met P- and agreed to cat sit for him while he's off in Europe for 5 weeks. I should start next week and it sounds like his two are a lot easier to handle than mine so no problem. He's agreed to return the favor with mine whenever I need it and his schedule permits so it sounds like I'll have the BSG con trip covered, yay!
Also watched "The Village", which intensified my desire (already strong after "Signs") to kick M. Night in the balls should I ever meet the man. Adrien Brody was at least mildly entertaining as the town mental defective, but that's about all this one had going for it. And the plot itself made "Unbreakable" seem almost plausible and realistic by comparison.
Saturday was class, wherein we all fretted about our zill playing. I need so much more practice *sigh* Then we went to lunch at this incredible Persian place and I had these 3 rice dishes that were to die for. My favorite was the saffron/jasmine rice with sour cherries. Oh my gods, so good. There was a great deal of chatting, some pictures, and at least a couple of toasts. It was wonderful.
Ran lots of errands then went home to start on my baby shower project and to watch "Comic Book: The Movie" with Aelf. Everyone should rent this, if not for the film itself (which I could watch all the time, I mean Mark Hamill portraying the ultimate comic book geek just makes me smile), then for the special features. They got literally the biggest and best voice actors out there today to star in it and they show this incredible panel performance at San Diego Comicon. There is nothing in this world like watching the actors who play Pinky and the Brain doing an impromptu riff in character. As soon as the fans heard, "Pinky, are you thinking what I'm thinking?" they lost their fucking minds...then again so did I. The film itself basically gave all these folks a character and then they worked with an outline of what they wanted to accomplish each day, but it's 95% improv and oh my god funny. The best interview had to be with Bruce Campbell, but Kevin Smith was a close second. Seriously, watch this film and the special features!
Sunday was Sin City, baby, and oh my god Elijah was teh sexay! I just wanted an entire film on psycho killer Kevin, and may have to buy it on dvd just to watch him kick the living shit out of Mickey Rourke. Heh. Overall it was the most true to the original work I've ever seen, I mean frame for frame it mimicked the graphic novel in such a visually stunning way that it defies explanation. Read the novels first then go see the film and your jaw will drop. Even if you haven't read them it's a gorgeous flick and well worth seeing. I need to find a few shots from the film to turn into icons...oh yes I do.
Also saw a kickass trailer for Hitchhiker's Guide which gives me great hope for the film. I mean the trailer was HG, the humor and self parody was just perfect. And oh my god Alan Rickman as Marvin was so fucking perfect. So. Fucking. Perfect.
I was also terrified to find myself liking the Star Wars trailer. *shudder*
Ran home to do laundry and clean the place up before settling in with my new quilt and watching "Flight of the Phoenix". It was actually way better than I'd expected, though the soundtrack was a bit more intrusive than it should have been (and using "Hey Ya" was just uncalled for). Still it had a lovely amount of Tony Curran shirtless (and doing a Scottish accent) which made me ever so happy. Giovanni Rabisi stole the film away from Quaid without too much of an effort, but that's probably not saying much. The soundtrack was also quite nice when it wasn't beating you over the head, and hey, it's never hard to stare at Miranda Otto for a few hours so it was all good.
Tonight we get new Wire in the Blood...mmmm...Robson...

Date: 2005-04-11 04:37 pm (UTC)So, how does it compare to the original?

Date: 2005-04-11 04:39 pm (UTC)I've only seen bits of the original but I'd say it's probably fairly close. I may rent it and sit down to really compare the two sometime, but as a modern reinterpretation it didn't seem half bad to me.

I nearly called you and held the phone up to the t.v., Aelf and I kept repeating that you had to see it while we watched. Maurice also does this Orson Welles bit that is not to be missed.

Date: 2005-04-11 07:28 pm (UTC)According to the story we heard he wasn't originally conceived of as Orson, but Maurice came up with the idea and managed to sell it to the show's creators.

Date: 2005-04-11 10:25 pm (UTC)Though Jess Harnell's performance and the absinthe deleted scene (with Jim Cummings and the silliest joke ever) makes the movie even more worth it.
