Every time Stephen Colbert is on the Daily Show I am reminded why I would happily have his love kittens. The only sort of pseudo-weak-link on the show is Samantha Bee, and even she is improving steadily. Must remember to tape tonight's rerun as I've heard it is not to be missed.

Um, ok, so I meant to get to bed early again last night. Seriously. I did! It's just...well...one of my favorite rec pages had been updated with some new fics that I was quite sure I was going to like. One had a premise that made me giggle, "Oh no fucking way that can work." So, of course, I had to read it. Didn't realize quite how far along I was in it (not very) by the time the story had grabbed me by the ear and was dragging me along. I'd glance at the clock and think, "Ok, I should stop now." At which point the story would take some amazing twist or turn and rather coyly suggest that I really had to keep going to find out how it was going to turn out.

And of course it was right, I couldn't stop reading until I'd made it through the entire thing, epilogue and all. The author took what could've been an utterly absurd premise (hint, male pregnancy was involved) and made it work with everyone remaining totally in character. But what really got me was that this story wasn't lighthearted, wasn't romantic (ok, it had a few romantic moments), wasn't in any way happy. It was horror, straight up, no frills psychological horror and I fucking sucked it up with a straw.

Damn there are just too few good, old fashioned horror stories out there these days and each one should be savored like an excellent meal. I just wish my savoring hadn't gone quite so late. I'm a bit sleep deprived today but damn it was so worth it!

okay, here's the thing about Samantha Bee. Number one, I think people tend to think that women are less funny, for some reason I can't quite fathom except for institutionalized sexism.

But the thing I notice about Samantha Bee is that her voiceover things for story-intros are smack-on - I mean, they sound EXACTLY like the sorts of hysterical-alarm 5 PM local news stories she's parodying. The other thing she's awesome at - I think, in some ways, better even than the boys, who sometimes laugh or overplay it - is saying ridiculous and insulting things in newsreporter voice. For instance, in that rock the vote segment, when she's saying that all their celebrities suck - when she interrupts to say "Coolio?" in the most sarcastic voice ever? Hysterical. Or, I thought it was. Also, she says "You cock-block the vote." with a completely straight face. Anyhow, I like her! um. but word on the love kittens of Stephen Colbert, obviously.

Overall I'd agree entirely, and she does sound like every local anchorwoman I've ever heard. I just think that often her timing leaves something to be desired. I felt exactly the same about Rob Corddry at the beginning too, and I think he's grown a lot on the show and improved as both a faux reporter and a comedian. I'm more than happy to give Samantha the same chance, I just don't think she's quite there yet. Still, considering the quality of the program, even if she is the weakest link, that still puts her leagues ahead of most of her contemporaries.

By the way...
