ebonlock: (Snakes on a Dark Lord)
Hee, somebody actually put together a rockin' video for the Tony Goldmark song Sirius Black, it's a hoot, check it out!

So this weekend I got to do not just one, but two things I've always wanted to. The first was going to hear the music of LOTR played by the SF symphony. The first part consisted of Fellowship music:

The Prophecy
Concerning Hobbits
The Shadow of the Past
A Short Cut to Mushrooms
The Old Forest
A Knife in the Dark
Many Meetings
The Ring Goes South
A Journey in the Dark
The Bridge of Khazad-dum
Lothlorien
Gandalf's Lament
Farewell to Lorien
the Great River
The Breaking of the Fellowship

Now I should mention that while the music is playing and the chorus is singing they're also showing Alan Lee's artwork on a big screen. So not only am I hearing some of the greatest movie music ever composed for one of my favorite film series ever, but I also get to gaze at some of my favorite artwork as well. *bliss*

The second part consisted of:

Foundations of Stone
The Taming of Smeagol
The Riders of Rohan
The Black Gate is Closed
Evenstar
The White Rider
Treebeard
The Forbidden Pool
Hope and Memory
The White Tree
The Steward of Gondor
Cirith Ungol
Anduril
The End of All Things
The Return of the King
The Grey Havens
Into the West

So I did break down a couple of times, Gandalf's Lament kicked my ass, though not quite as hard as "Into the West", which always gets me. I think with the latter it's both the lyrics, which are just so sweet, but also the story behind the song, and remembering the young man who inspired it. The rest of the time I kept trying not to think quite so much about how the music matched up with parts of the films, it was just so hard to seperate the two sometimes. I kept hearing bits of dialogue, even though I just wanted to appreciate the music as, well, music. Although I've got to say the choir was just stunning. I mean the music was great too, but oh those vocalists...Can you believe they even did Viggo's lyrics from the coronation sequence? I wouldn't have gone with a baritone there, but nonetheless it was stunning. And Khazad-dum was just breathtaking.

We went out with the Spamalot group afterwards for dinner at Max's, which was quite lovely, and then zoomed home where I steam cleaned the messiest bit of my carpet because I'm like that.

Today I grabbed [livejournal.com profile] moonlightnrain for "The Adventures of Robin Hood" on the big screen. I'd thought the crowd at opening night for "Pirates of the Caribbean 2" was rowdy, but they had nothing on this bunch. The first close up of Errol and the place went bug-fuck. Of course, given that they'd warmed us up with "What's Opera, Doc?", it probably shouldn't have been surprising that the place was ready to have some fun. And it was packed! I mean I've been a fan of the flick since I was a kid, thanks to my dad, but I didn't realize just how popular it was, and the age range of people seeing it was just amazing.

I've never seen the film on the big screen and I have to say the little screen just doesn't do those costumes justice. I noticed all kinds of details I'd never seen before, even though I've seen the movie at least a hundred times (probably much more). Of course I have to admit I spent way too much time wondering how long it would take to make some of those costumes and what it would take to make some of them. None of the girls' stuff, of course, just the guys, though I couldn't quite decide which of the boys' outfits I liked best. I was leaning towards Will Scarlet or Sir Guy of Gisborne.

Yeah, 'cause I need more costumes in my life...

*sigh*
