ebonlock: (Super Good!)
So I've been awake since 2:30 this morning, and yet I don't feel that out of it. Had I known [livejournal.com profile] aelfsciene was similarly afflicted with insomnia I probably would've gotten up and gone to chat with her. Sadly, I didn't, and I had this vain hope that I might pass out again if I just lay still enough. So much for that idea.

I'm currently choosing to blame two things, one the caffeinated drink I had with lunch and the Dr. Who episode "Love and Monsters". The former was a Thai iced tea which, in combination with garlic and curry sauce, did a right number on my stomach for the rest of the day. The latter was just...disturbing in a profound way. By the end of the ep I'd decided I didn't want to watch that one pretty much ever again. I just couldn't get it out of my head, and not in a good way, still can't quite...*shudder*

I have to say that this season has been a love/hate one, "Love and Monsters" and "Idiot's Lantern" definitely go on the "hate" side, but given that all the rest end up tallied under "love" I guess I can't bitch too much. Still, I'm having a hard time understanding how series one could have been so much better overall. I mean they seem to have retained the same group of writers, so why they're all over the place quality wise this season is beyond me.

Enough about that, though, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ravenmb who is graciously allowing me to babysit her TiVo for her for a bit. She was kind enough to spend several long and frustrating hours attempting to get it hooked up with me yesterday. We ended the afternoon with success after many attempts and now everything but my region free DVD player is all hooked up and working perfectly. Yay! I do have one question though, for everyone out there with TiVo/DVD-R's, can I dump stuff periodically to the DVD-R or do I need to do a single write like I would on a computer? Just want to make sure before I end up wasting a disc.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] ravenmb do you want Hex? If not I'm removing that one from the record list 'cause I've decided the show pretty much sucks and isn't worth my time. But if you want it I'll happily dump it to dvd for you.

And many thanks to my friend J- whose gifts arrived on Saturday. I now have a gorgeous teal Sharks bag, some cool BSG dog tags, a backup copy of "Last Exile", a Dharma t-shirt and my prized possession, a Monarch t-shirt! And hey new Venture Brothers episodes start soon, woo!

Tristero nails it:

I finally saw An Inconvenient Truth and I simply can't stress enough how important it is for as many people as possible to see it. Not only because it is a superb, sobering description of an imminent environmental catastrophe. Something even more important is on display.

An Inconvenient Truth depicts a genuine American politics of engagement and character. Or more precisely, the untapped potential for it. In the film, Gore says several times that tackling head-on the serious problems that global warming causes is an urgent moral duty. He's right, of course. But the film makes abundantly clear Gore himself has a moral imperative. And that is to return to electoral politics as soon as possible. Man oh man, does this country need more like him.

Should Gore run for president again? Hell, I'd vote for him in a heartbeat. Gladly, juat as I did in 2000... But Somerby has a good point. The mainstream press loathes Gore and that makes it exceedingly difficult to determine how much of a chance he has. That said, a Gore campaign conducted at the political and intellectual level of the film would be so inspiring it could just motivate considerable interest and commitment by young people which could help counter that kind of assault.

As I've said before, if you haven't seen "An Inconvenient Truth" you really, really should. I can't remember the last time I felt so politically inspired by anything, the Gore seen in that film is the man I grew up admiring, someone who understands the real dangers this country is facing, and has spent time, energy, and brains on figuring out what to do about it.

As to his point about the press, I've got to say that no matter who the Dems throw into the ring, the press is going to savage them. We lost the press years ago, but far too many of us fell in to the "liberal press" fallacy with a disturbing ease, and we're having far more difficulty freeing ourselves from it than I'd like. Assume the press will be working actively to undermine whatever candidate we propose, and form a strategy to counter it. Continuing to naively believe that if we just pick the right person they'll get behind them, is a sure fire way to doom ourselves in '08 as we did in '04.
