Fretting

First, for those who don't read the bellydance community here on LJ, but who are interested in all kinds of costumes (including Ren Faire stuff) you should check out this gal's eBay auctions, some cool stuff there. Well, if you're 5'5" or so anyway. None for me.

I'm fretting today because of something that happened on our way to class last night. When we got out of the car this little chocolate colored cat immediately ran right up to us. Aelf and I knelt down to pet it, and it was a bit skittish but friendly. I noted it had a little bobbed tail, and that combined with its terrier-like back legs and short spine leads me to believe it was a Manx. Maybe not purebred, but damn close. It also exhibited a lot of dog-like characteristics, unfortunately excessive drooling was one of them.

This gave both Aelf and I pause as it could be a sign of illness, even rabies. We said goodbye to the little guy and went to class, but afterwards we talked to Alyne and asked if she knew of the cat. She didn't, so we figured we'd ask her sister to keep an eye out for it and feed it if it turned up. On the way back to the car I spotted it hanging out right where we'd left it and sure enough as soon as we came close it trotted right out to say hello.

Aelf lost her heart in a matter of minutes, and the cat seemed quite smitten with her too. So we tried to lead the little guy up to Maylne's place so we could at least get it fed, but it bolted back down the street. Eventually Alyne, Maylne and her new roommate were out there with us trying to figure out what to do with it. Maylne went back for a cat carrier and we tried our best to get it in, but the cat bolted and took off running. None of us could find it and Aelf and I were convinced it ran off into a neighbor's backyard due to all the barking that suddenly erupted back there.

From what I've been reading this morning it's highly unlikely that it had rabies, rather that it has some kind of dental problem or, worse, ate something at least mildly toxic. So now I'm just worried sick about the little thing. I'd happily drive back down there tonight with our own carrier (top loading, much easier to deal with an unhappy kitty) and a can of soft food to coax it with. I want to get it checked out at a vet in the worst possible way, and I'd be happy to take it home and socialize it so that it could be adopted out. The only problem is that if it is a true Manx they bond with one human or family and then tend not to adapt well. But they said that about Siamese too, and I think Pye would do quite well if he were adopted by someone else even after I'd had him for a few years. He's just laid back and friendly and this kitty struck me as the same.

Gods I wish I wasn't stuck at work all day worrying. *sigh*
