"I can swim."
Jan. 29th, 2004 08:52 amHow happy am I that
undone27 has been pic-spamming in honor of Elijah's birthday? Well, I think my new icon answers that question.
Made it through the remainder of season 1 DS9 last night, "The Forsaken" (my second fave of S1), "Dramatis Personae" (Odo looks so adorably puzzled through all of that one), "Duet" (arguably on the top ten best episodes of the entire series list), and "In the Hands of the Prophets" (which finally gets us really into the meat of the story to come in this series). I will admit when Vedek Winn appeared onscreen the hairs on the back of my neck stood straight up. I swear she based that character's smirking, vicious brand of religious fanaticism directly on Pat Robertson/Jerry Falwell. And damn did she do a good job of it.
Aelf also described Vedek Bareil as "cute, but creepy", which was just the impression everyone I used to watch the series with had as well. Great minds and all that.
If the IRS gods are smiling on me when I do my taxes this weekend my big splurge is probably going to be seasons 1-3 of the series. As I've already got 4-6, it's a necessity.
Things I'm having a hard time waiting for already:
1) The Dominion!
2) Weyoun
3) The Intendent (though a nice foreshadowing of her in "Dramatis Personae")
4) Garak on a leash
5) The Defiant
6) "Crossfire"
7) "In the Pale Moonlight"
8) "His Way"
9) Odo verbally bitch-slapping Worf....Sisko verbally bitch-slapping Worf...ok, everybody verbally bitch-slapping Worf.
10) Martok and Enabrin Tain
11) "The Visitor"
12) "The Wire"
13) "Improbable Cause/The Die is Cast"
14) "Facets"
Ok, I need to stop now. But I guess there's still lots to look forward to. *happy sigh*

You're very welcome, glad they made it over there (finally) in mostly one piece :)

Date: 2004-01-29 11:35 am (UTC)Actually the vibe I get off Winn isn't so much Christian conservative as fundamentalist Muslim. You may think that's a distinction without a difference, but it seems to me that the viciousness of people like Robertson and Falwell is chiefly in the abstract: sure, they may condemn various segments of the population as sinners, but they're not handpicking brainwashed followers to assassinate their enemies. Winn, on the other hand, does exactly that in at least one episode.
7) "In the Pale Moonlight"
One of the best Trek episodes ever.

Date: 2004-01-29 11:55 am (UTC)If we're talking actions, yeah, I can see the similarities there. But I'm talking about the way the actress plays the character. The saccharine sweet "I'm so holy butter wouldn't melt in my mouth" smirk and "God talks to me and me alone" attitude. Watch the 700 Club sometime (if your blood pressure can take it, mine no longer can) and I think you'll see what I mean.

The writers had balls of steel on this show, and that episode really proved it.

Date: 2004-01-29 02:18 pm (UTC)The sad thing is I know that once I get something substantial published I'll be watching the 700 Club religiously (pun intended) in hopes that I'll be mentioned in derrision...some twisted part of me needs to hear them advise parents not to let their children read my books.
