Premature Alzheimers confirmed
Dec. 9th, 2003 08:42 amOk today I managed to do one of the most idiotic and brainless things I have ever done. I got 3/4 of the way to work and realized I'd left my purse at home. You know, that thing that carries all my i.d. (including my driver's license) and my money and my phone. Yeah, that thing. I know precisely how I did it, I just can't quite still believe that I didn't notice for such a long time. Decided to just push on to work, but it means I have to cancel my tea-night and stress mightily all the way home. It also means I'll spend the day mentally self-flagellating. Of course I should've known I wasn't quite awake this morning when I tried to put a condiment into the freezer. Jesus, that sleep dep thing really is catching up with me, or at least I hope that's all it is.
Before I forget,
aelfsciene needs to go to the following ROTK movie clip page and scroll all the way down to the bottom. Pippin with the sparkly thing, you need to see this bit. Haven't had time to check out the others yet, but this one scene alone gave me goosebumps. Tres spoilery, just so you know.
Saw the first two hours and taped them last night and I'm glad I did. Don't know that I'd call it "great" yet, but it certainly has the potential to be. Still don't know who everyone is and I'm a little puzzled by some of the character changes.
Liked the battlestar itself, the fact that it's so low tech and that Adama fought to keep it that way (despite being called a luddite for doing so) is a great concept. No networked systems are allowed on the ship because cylons can take them over, this way they can get one or two systems, but not all of them (which turned out to be a pretty big element of how they wiped out most of the 12 colonies).
Old school Vipers...hell yeah.
Adama is coming off so far as less of a saint than the original, more troubled and guilt-ridden. He's been blamed for the death of his son Zak, and his relationship with Apollo (or Lee) is strained to the breaking point. He's got an ex-wife, but no daughter. Odd that they did away with Athena entirely, but they did add the innuendo that Starbuck and Zak had been an item. Interesting.
Apollo. Well he was never one of my favorites, but the actor (who used to play my beloved Mr. Kennedy on Horatio) Jamie Bamber is doing a good job making him a no-nonsense, by-the-books kind of guy. He also seems very reluctant to be in the military, he's a pilot because he loves to fly and that's all. Didn't get much interaction time with Starbuck yet so I'll be fascinated to see where that goes.
Starbuck. Always my favorite, but then I was a young girl when the show first aired and Dirk Benedict was *da bomb* at the time, so not surprising. The female Starbuck seems to be even more of a hot-head than the original, but just as much of a shit. She's smoked fumerellos, used "Frak" a few times (though I'd dearly love to hear just one "Felgerkarb!"), and done a remarkably good job of convincing me she lives for nothing but drinking, gambling, and battle. Yep, that's Starbuck all right.
Colonel Ty is a puzzlement, the original was starchy, officius and hideously preoccupied with appearances (though obsessively loyal to Adama). This one seems barely competant, bitter and a booze-hound. He also openly despises Starbuck for no real reason I can comprehend. I'll be interested to see where this goes.
Boomer is ok so far, but needs fleshing out desperately.
Baltar is much improved in this incarnation. He's a total cad (though a brilliant one), lying, cowardly, and completely self-absorbed. As Number 6 pointed out, though he's just discovered that his entire civilization is about to be destroyed, he's still only worried about how it's going to effect him. This Baltar is a great deal more palatable than the original who just oozed smarm and evil like a bad cologne.
Number 6 made my lip curl a bit, at least a first, but I found her interesting by the end. She's definitely conflicted, particularly where Baltar is concerned, and malevolent without being too villainous. She's got potential.
Still waiting to be introduced to Jolly, though I could've sworn I heard his name at one point. And will there be a Cassie? Will Adama reveal some inner spiritual quest for the 13th lost colony? Or will they just run like hell and try to avoid the cylons for as long as possible? Guess I'll have to keep tuning in to find out.
Now I shall go back to whacking my head against the wall for my overt stupidity this morning.

Date: 2003-12-09 11:12 am (UTC)At least both are somewhat edible, right? I do wonder, though, what would've happened had I succeeded in putting the mayo in the freezer. Very bad things, undoubtedly.
