Ever had one of those nights when you thought that maybe it'd be a good idea if you just went to bed at 7 so you could end it a little sooner? That was me last night.

Got stuck in traffic on the way home and ended up rather late. Getting home well after dark sucks. Walked in the door to two starving kitties, who got their food while I checked out the box I'd received. Glory be, the heating fan I'd ordered a few weeks ago finally arrived. Nice one too, and it heats up my bathroom in nothing flat.

While setting that up I decided to fry up some hashbrowns to have with dinner and set the timer appropriately. Unfortunately I took the box a bit too literally and even at the lowest cooking time, they burned. Which created smoke. Which spread quickly through our little house. Can you see where this is going?

On the plus side I can now confirm that every smoke detector in the place works, with the possible exception of the office one. However, that got tested last year when I tried to actually use the fireplace.

So I went from one to the next pulling the batteries while Pye thought it was a fun new game and Kage cowered under the couch. Opened all the windows and doors to clear it out and disposed of my now crispy and blackened dinner. Fortunately I still had a frozen dinner I could turn to.

Meanwhile I glanced up and noted that the feakin' huge spider I'd be kind enough to escort back out into the garage the last time I'd found it in the kitchen, was back. That thing just doesn't take a hint. This sucker is of a size that would make Steve Irwin fondle it and call it a "beauty". Big. So I grabbed the broom and attempted to once again remove it to the garage. This time, however, it was ready for me and escaped under a cabinet. I considered going in after it and then decided with the night I was having I'd undoubtedly end up bitten or worse.

Considered actually putting in some veil time, and quickly came to the conclusion that it just wasn't the night to work on anything creative. Instead I swept and vacuumed, and then replaced all the smoke detector batteries. Then a nice hot shower in my now toasty bathroom, and a cup of hot cocoa to round it out. Much better.

On the plus side I did get some other little organizational stuff done, and confirmed that I can tape beautifully from my DVD player (hooray!). Also got to see "The Apartment" while running around doing stuff and was reminded why all men are scum...except Jack Lemmon. Watched a little of Irma la Douce before calling it, finally, a night.

Tonight just has to be better, right?

That sounds like an absolutely wonderful evening, well, after the spider. Maybe just the shower and cocoa and the movie. :)

(And, hmmm. Would you be willing to do some dubbing work with your dub machine? I want to make copies of "Shark Byte" to send to [livejournal.com profile] declineandfall (and [livejournal.com profile] kathlaw), and [livejournal.com profile] mallen)

And don't forget the smoke detectors...oh and I forgot to mention the part about Kage barfing on the back room rug again. And I think I'm starting to lose my hair...

Any time, dear, it's all set up and can be used without interfering with anything else we might want to do in the back room. Even has dubbing speed. Mmm, fast dubs!

Aie. You definitely deserved the hot cocoa after that one! :P

Woo! Next thing I need to do is actually dump the eps onto *a* tape to make *the* tapes. :) Hmm. Maybe able to do that by this weekend; I will coordinate with you after that. :)

Sympathies on your Murphy's Law evening, hon. Any clue what kind of spider it was? Other than "really freaking BIG"?

Well it was large and light brown. Beyond that your guess is as good as mine.

Sounds like a nursery web spider. They grow large, they're kind of brown in colour, and can be found in North America. Some are solid light brown, some have stripes. It doesn't sound like a tarantula if only because they prefer much hotter, drier areas, but also because tarantula's are darker and shaggy with hair.

But they aren't dangerous, if that's any comfort. I mean they can bite, but they're not deadly. Here's a page on the nursery web spider:

{{{hugs}}} [pats to the kitties] Ugh, about the spider. And about Steve Irwin fondling it. (what the hell do you suppose turns that man on?)

Anyway, hope tomorrow is better, brighter and filled with tasty boys to ogle. ;-)
