In a weird mood today, paradoxical really. I'm happy because tonight I get to see the Violent Femmes live up in the city with [livejournal.com profile] aelfsciene and [livejournal.com profile] jakejr, it's my first time seeing them in concert and I'm sure it's going to be fabulous. But I'm also actively fretting about our cats. See when I got home last night I stopped in the garage door and to my horror found my kitchen looking like a crime scene. Blood spattered all over the floor in big dark drops. Terrified, I called the cats and was relieved when both appeared looking none the worse for wear.

After a quick inspection I discovered that it was Pye who'd lost the blood, Kage'd taken a piece out of his right ear and got him on the head as well. He must've bled like a stuck pig and helpfully ran from room to room shaking his head for maximum damage. We found blood on the kitchen floor, my bathroom floor, the doors, the office carpet (yeah, that was fun), and I even found a drop in my sink.

He seemed perfectly ok, though, and the wounds are scabbing over so no sign of infection. Still, my heart nearly stopped when I saw what had happened and now I'm doing some serious thinking. Is it safe to keep the two of them in the same house? What if she does something worse to him later on? My first two thoughts are thus, clip both their claws so as to minimize damage from swipes, and two look into getting a tall baby-gate to put in the hallway to seperate the two of them during the day. It'd do wonders for my peace of mind, but would Pye be miserable only having our two bedrooms and the bathroom to roam in?

Any cat experts with ideas or suggestions please feel free to share them. I've always had multiple cats but I've never seen them hate one another quite to this degree before. I was glad Kage wanted to go out in the yard last night, I think some alone time did her good, but they're cooped up in the house all day and night alone together today. I just hope we have two cats by the time we get home tonight.

After clipping their claws, you could put on nail covers to really minimize the damage they can do to each other. I doubt the baby gates will work, though, unless they go all the way to the ceiling. When we brought maya home when she was four months old (and still pretty small) I put two baby gates on top of each other in a doorway so that she could see/sniff the other cats (and vice versa). That lasted all of 9 hours before they could all climb in and out, and it was 7' high.

Other than that I don't know what to tell you. :(

patience and time... they need to establish hierarchy. They also need their own spaces. Do you have at least 2 and preferrably 3 litter boxes in the house... and maybe 2 feeding areas?
