Nov. 30th, 2007 10:09 amI got ungodly amounts done yesterday but somehow my weekend is still going to be jam packed with things that need doing. It doesn't make a huge amount of sense, but there you are. Gods I'm glad I had last weekend to be a slug and recharge.
When I got home I managed to get the place mostly tidy for Avatar night and bake the first cake I've made in years. I learned a valuable lesson about reading the box before preparing said cake in the future, though, alas, it came too late to stop said cake from being only about 2 inches high. Still I won't count it a complete disaster as it still smells and looks quite yummy for a completely sugar free confection. Next time either I go with a smaller cake pan or more of the mix.
While doing this I caught up on the last two episodes of Project Runway which I'm actually watching as it airs this season. I can't help myself, it's just too damn compelling...certainly more so than some other programs I might mention (*coughHeroescough*). And this season I actually have a favorite, Elisa, the kookie New Age chick who spits on her fabric to imbue it with her essence and does all her sewing by hand. What the hell is not to love in that? But the thing that I like most about her is that she's just so damn cheerful about everything. Even when stressed she approaches every challenge with good humor and an almost Zen-like calm. She's one of the few people I've ever seen on the show who is actually really just happy to be there, being a part of it is clearly enough for her and it's freed her to do what she actually wants to rather than what she thinks will win the contest for her.
This is, of course, why she's doomed not to win. Mind you it has nothing to do with her skill, despite a lack of formal training and an abhorrence for sewing machines she's got a fantastic eye and everything she sends down the runway manages to look pretty damn good (ok the train on her first dress was an abomination, but it showed she had some serious balls and I admire that). I think she's got a serious chance to make it into the final 3, but that's as far as I can see her going. Still I'm determined to enjoy every minute she manages to last on the series.
Now I should point out that I don't know fashion at all, but the joy of the show for me is in seeing creative people creating something every single episode. I don't really care about the drama that each harried challenge produces, it's about the work itself for me, seeing what each of these incredibly talented people comes up with. Ok that and Tim Gunn who I have a mad, utterly platonic crush on.
Anyway, after that was Kathy Griffith's latest stand up performance that started out a bit wobbly but then warmed up to full on hillarity. Doesn't matter what kind of mood I'm in, all I have to do is watch her and I feel better. Her "Hey Paula" material is downright deadly, Paula Abdul has become her new muse, the latest incarnation of Ana Nicole Smith. You can tell Kathy was bereft at her passing and is relieved to have someone to take her place now. If you get a chance, watch the special, which I think is called "Straight to Hell".
