So for those I haven't spoken to recently, Kage's tumor was bad enough before she started licking it raw...and it got infected...and despite bandaging and oral antibiotics it's getting worse. She's also started to sleep all the time and ignore food and water unless I basically bully her into eating.

Now I know I said I was just going to let nature take its course (so to speak), but it will surprise no one that I'm thinking of calling the vet tomorrow and making an appointment to have her leg amputated.

This is going to suck, seriously, for both of us. But right now the options seem to be:

a. Putting her to sleep
b. Letting the pain and infection slowly do her in
c. Rolling the dice, removing her leg up to the "elbow" and hoping she survives the surgery, the recovery, and life on 3 legs

On the plus side, wound care on an amputation will be a cake walk compared to the two gaping wounds that preceded it. And the other plus side is, hey, we might get a few more months rather than a few more days/weeks. Anything could happen, right?

Yes, I know I'm a crazy person. Really, I'm totally clear on that point. And of course this is all happening just as I get ready to sign the final escrow paperwork on the house and move into it. I've had the John Lennon line, "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans" cycling through my head for the past few days.

I don't think you're crazy at all, if the only other option is to let her suffer or have her put down, I say see if the vet agrees with the amputation option at this point. When all is said and done, you'll know that you did everything in your power to help her. We're thinking of you and Kage!!

The way I'm looking at it now is the real choice is "Die fast or die slow" and if I can go with "slow" then why the hell not. She may end up hating me for it, but at least she'll be alive to do it.

I'm sorry to hear about your kitty. I've been in a similar sitution with my kitty and I sympathize. I hope everything turns out well and I wish you luck on your move.

Ugh, honey. Just ugh. *hugs*

Am I still coming over tomorrow to help with the bandaging?

Let me get back to you. If the vet says I can bring her in tomorrow after work then no bandaging necessary.

I don't think she'll hate you for it. Lots of kitties live good lives on three legs. It may take some getting used to, but I think if it makes her feel better and gives her a better quality of life (even if only for a few more months) and eases your conscience at the same time, then definitely talk to the vet and get a professional opinion as to what to do. I mean, who knows, if she tolerates the amputation it could give her considerably more time.

Thinking of you guys! Let me know what the vet says.

I think amputation isn't a bad idea. Life is too precious to let it go if you have options. See what the vet says. *hug*

What does the vet suggest?

My thoughts and prayers go with you and Kage.

If there's anything I can do please call.

He's the one who suggested amputation and I shot it down as an option. That was before the infection set in, of course. He says it's the only way to stop the cancer so long as it hasn't spread. He pronounced her lymph nodes clean on Saturday, so...
