It's been an eventful weekend and I'd like to share a bit of it before it drifts out of my brain. Saturday started bright and early with a trip to SFO with reluctantgenius who's hopefully having a great time with his family back east. Then it was off to aelfsciene's to drop melimus and murdoch at the train station before zooming off to meet M-, J- and the latter's fella' S- for a trip to the flea market and Fabrics 'R Us. The troupe proceeded to purchase veil material and to narrow down the fabric we'd like to go with on our costumes for DDF.

We parted ways around lunchtime and I had a chance to grab some food before Aelf and I took Kage to her vet's appointment. Her CREA and BUN numbers were higher, which isn't great news but wasn't unexpected since she'd started eating better and wasn't receiving fluid treatments any longer. They weren't high enough to make the vet hesitate as far as her surgery was concerned and the fact that the tumor is growing so quickly made it plain to everyone that we needed to move forward. So I start the fluid treatments on a daily basis and she goes in for surgery tomorrow. Alef is going to drop her off in the morning and I'll be able to pick her up that evening. We won't know whether there will be any wound care needs until afterwards, so keep your fingers crossed that all goes smoothly and she just has a few stitches to deal with.

After that tersa, cyranocyrano, Aelf and I went to see Watchmen which I quite liked. Not in a "Wow that was fun!" sort of way, nor will I necessarily feel the need to buy it, but it was a good film. Let me amend this by adding I'm not a Watchmen fangirl, I read the graphic novel and enjoyed it but that was as far as it went. I thought the film did a great job of bringing the comic to life and I also thought the guy playing Rorschach was downright brilliant. I was most impressed by the fight choreography and filming. One thing I hate above all others is jerky, spastic fight filming that makes it impossible to see what the hell is going on. The fact that they actually slowed things down, lovingly, during the fight sequences to let you see every single detail was glorious.

Came home afterwards and all but passed out immediately so I could be up bright and early today. Got a bunch of errands done and then elo_sf arrived to watch Whitechapel, a great BBC mystery series about a modern day Jack the Ripper. Really well done and very satisfying which makes me fear some American producer is going to take it into his head to bring it across the pond. *sigh*

elo_sf also proved once again that he's about the sweetest and most generous guy I've ever had the privilege to know. Dammit, I'm getting all teary-eyed again.

Anyway after he took off for dinner I took it into my head to give Kage her fluid treatment on my own. I needed to do it, to prove that I could and that if I couldn't get anyone to lend me a hand it would be ok. So I scooped her up, made sure she was trapped between me and the cushions, poked her and off we went. She didn't like it and I didn't get a full 100 ml into her, but she tolerated about half that and it went quickly and smoothly. It was such a relief to know I can do it on my own with a little planning and determination.

And now I'm going to kick back and relax for the rest of the evening...but if you all could spare a thought for Kage tomorrow afternoon I'd really appreciate it.

Yeah thats how I felt I wasn't blown away but it was good, I thought the fight scenes were cool the way they slowed down and went the opposite way you thought, hard to believe Rorschach was Kelly from the Bad News Bears, I think they would have been better to shoot it through his eyes and change the story a bit it might have done a little better for the general public as I think a lot of the movie went over young peoples head that didn't live through the Cold war. Yeah, Rorschach stole the picture. Very nice job. I think whoever handled the soundtrack should be shot, as the same effect could have been gotten by setting a radio's presets to the local classic rock station and the local adult-contemporary station during the 80s hour and then having a chimpanzee flip between them.

The thing that really undermined the picture for me, though, was Ozymandias. I wonder if whoever did casting actually read the book, and more importantly the supporting material outside the drawn panels. My understanding is that Adrian Veidt is supposed to be (in no particular order) George Clooney, Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates, Brad Pitt, Joe Montana, Michael Jordan, Warren Buffett, Steve Jobs and Barack Obama all rolled into one. Instead we get some weedy little fop with an inconsistent accent and a suit he probably rolled Prince for.

I know it's become cliche at this point, but yeah, Malin Akerman had about as much range and depth as one of those things I saw at Chuck E. Cheese today - but then again, her quasi-husband sounded more like he should be out opening the pod bay doors than watching gluons get stuck to neutrinos.

It was fine, for what it was - I think it's probably the best version of Watchmen that could be made given the constraints of contemporary commercial American film. That said, I'd still like to see what could be done with it in an 8-hour HBO series or something. That said, I still think anyone who thought this was going to be a franchise-tentpole-type blockbuster a la Iron Man or The Dark Knight should probably have their head examined, because you can do a lot of things with fanservice but making half a billion dollars ain't one of 'em. =)

I must agree that Erik is the sweetest guy I know as well.

I hope all goes well with Kage. I will continue to hold Kage and you in the Light.
