Wanted to post a couple of quick things before I forget (and the way my brain's been lately this would not be at all surprising). First, if you're not watching "Whale Wars" you really should be. It's the most compelling hour of television you'll ever see and it's consistent. You see an episode and think, 'Ok there's no way the next episode is going to be this intense, it just can't be.' and then it is. But beyond that it's the most fair and honest depiction of an extreme animal rights group I've ever seen. Though I will recommend that you not watch it alone, you'll want someone there to talk to about what you're seeing and what's happening.

Speaking of tv,

First I'd like to start by commenting that I don't despite Jennifer Keller despite the fact that she played one of my all time least favorite female scifi characters of all time on Firefly. And mind you, this is coming from someone who grew up during the era of Buck Rogers and the original BSG. Yeah, Casseopia the hooker/nurse in space annoyed me less than Kayleigh.

At any rate I was totally prepared to loathe her for a variety of reasons (including the fact that she usurped the place of my beloved Carson Beckett) and yet I didn't. I kind of even got to like her as a character despite the fact that she's often whiny. After "The Shrine" I'd even grown to respect her, but in "Brainstorm" she almost undid all of my growing admiration. How, you ask? Well I should explain that I have a personal pet peeve about people who want to date others only if those others change and conform to their vision for them. If you don't want to date someone for who they are then don't fucking date them!

Gah, yes this is a big red blinky button issue for me, I cop to that. But the first conversation the two characters have on the jet made me want to smack Jennifer good and hard. Yes Rodney can be difficult, a little too negative, a little too competitive, a little too proud...but that's who he is. Yeah he's still growing and changing and he's done a helluva developing over the years, but she was all but saying, "Be nicer, be happier, be more humble or I won't like you".

I turned to [livejournal.com profile] moonlightnrain on several occasions and groused, "John wouldn't have done that." or "John likes him just the way he is." Later on when we get to the fancy scientific presentation (and seriously, whoever decided to include Bill Nye the Science Guy is a damn genius) and Rodney is horrified by what's about to happen he leaps up to try to stop it. Jennifer sits there like he's just embarrassed her in front of her parents. All I could think was that John would've already been asking him who he needed to shoot and backing him up, not trying to shush him.

I recognize she's not team, she's not really had to rely directly on Rodney saving her ass at the eleventh hour, but she knows how smart he is and that if he's panicking about something it's probably justified. And the whole alternate universe bridge thing really should've been sufficient to send even her internal alarms pinging. But no, it's not until the temps start dropping and the cold lighting is almost killing people that she comes on board.

The episode was proving to be deeply frustrating to me until the final sequence where Rodney finally stands up for himself and makes it clear to her that he is who he is and he's not going to fundamentally change. I mean jeez, if she wanted a humble guy Zelenka's still single, right? As soon as he stood up for himself and she seemed to get it I let myself relax a little. It's still not the relationship I'd like to see on the show but at least I can stomach it for now.

In other news I got an amazing amount done this weekend as far as gifts are concerned so I'm feeling good about that. I'm still waiting for a few things to arrive in the mail but with any luck everything will be wrapped and shipped where it needs to go by the second week in December. It'll be nice to have my living room back to being just that and not gift central.
