Ok, so I promised no more politics here in the ol' journal...I lied:
Family Values Drive Santorum's Politics
Two-parent families, says Santorum, are good. Requiring people to work is good. So is banning late-term abortions and giving religion a greater role in government. Traditional welfare, on the other hand, hurts the family. Homosexuality, feminism, liberalism all undermine the family. Even parts of the Constitution can harm the family.
"If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual (gay) sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything," the Pennsylvania lawmaker said in a recent interview, fuming over a landmark gay rights case before the high court that pits a Texas sodomy law against equality and privacy rights.
"All of those things are antithetical to a healthy, stable, traditional family," Santorum said. "And that's sort of where we are in today's world, unfortunately. It all comes from, I would argue, this right to privacy that doesn't exist, in my opinion, in the United States Constitution."
"Dogs and cats living together...mass hysteria!" Sorry, couldn't resist.
And he's from Pennsylvania...well at least we know he's serving the views and desires of the majority in his state anyway. Every hate group in the state (and there are lots, trust me) has probably got his poster on their wall. Oh, and he labels himself a "compassionate conservative" in case you were wondering.
Will he go the way of Trent Lott? I think there's a very good possibility that he won't, which makes me tremendously sad. It also inspires me to make sure everyone I know all throughout the US gets out there and votes in every election from now on.
Ok, I'm going to stop now before I get myself too worked up, on to more pleasant topics.
Dance class was tremendous last night, a fabulous workout, and for once I mostly got the steps. I just have memory farts from time to time and end up looking a bit jerky and awkward, but the important thing was that despite a few missteps I managed to keep the timing of the moves and remember which foot I was supposed to end up on. Go me!
We ended up staying late to see
eilonwey's superb solo veil choreography, which floored everyone watching it. You all really must see it, it's just amazing and she looks fantastic doing it. Then Aelf and I cornered Alyne to chat about the new veil video I'm picking up this week (she gave it a tremendous thumb's up), and to talk anime. The woman's just a font of information on so many topics and so delightful to chat with that sometimes tearing ourselves away at the end of the night is much harder than it should be. Of course two hours of dancing makes one a bit fatigued and in my case, a bit hungry too, so we said a reluctant good night and headed home.
The definite plus side of a good hard workout is that I generally pass out within seconds of my head hitting the pillows. But last night I made myself stay up a bit later to re-do my altar and hold a small ceremony in honor of Ostara. It was so delightfully relaxing that combined with the workout and the shower I got the best night's sleep I have in weeks.
Ended up missing the conclusion of Helen of Troy, but I did get to see the Judgement of Paris and the sacrifice of Iphigenia so I was mostly happy with just seeing the first half. Hopefully I'll get home early enough tonight to spend at least a few minutes working on my veil, I so want to get it done!

Date: 2003-04-22 10:43 am (UTC)Mrs. Santorum: Hello, Santorum residence.
Husky male voice: I'm calling from Brown Bag Toys, is Mr. Santorum in?
Mrs. Santorum: No, I'm sorry, he's not.
Voice: Ah, well, we just wanted to check his order. We were unsure if it was for three Back Blast Love Dolls, or if he meant to get just one along with two of the Back Door Buddies.

Date: 2003-04-22 11:52 am (UTC)Around the gay bay, this is a pretty cut and dried issue: does the state have an interest in regulating sex acts between consenting adults? I think in 99% of cases, no, the state does not have any right to regulate sex acts between consenting adults.
Don't go thinking that people in PA are "hate-filled." In California, remember, there was a ballot initiative (in 2000 or 2001, I think) to mandate that marriage is legally defined as a union between a man and a woman only. That measure is at LEAST as asinine as the Texas sodomy law, and Senator Santorum's remarks.

Date: 2003-04-22 01:03 pm (UTC)Oh I know, it's just I lived in NY for years and got to see what a lot of folks in Pennsylvania were like outside of the major cities. It was downright disturbing how many of my friends ran into trouble in that state because they "looked different" or "might be gay" or just had the wrong skin color.
