Can anybody explain to me why Ron Paul is considered a serious Republican presidential candidate rather than that weird guy on the bus you try to avoid making eye contact with? 'Cause his latest campaign letter is really making me think that he and the Midnight Bomber What Bombs at Midnight might have way more in common than I'd previously thought. A slight spoiler below:

I don’t need to tell you that our American way of life is under attack. We see it all around us — every day — and it is up to us to save it.

The world’s elites are busy forming a North American Union. If they are successful, as they were in forming the European Union, the good ‘ol USA will only be a memory. We can’t let that happen.

The UN also wants to confiscate our firearms and impose a global tax. The UN elites want to control the world’s oceans with the Law of the Sea Treaty.
[Ed. note: Aquaman is going to be so pissed!] And they want to use our military to police the world.

I would pay good money to hear this letter read aloud by someone capable of either doing a passable Dr. Strangelove impersonation, or a good Monarch one. And then [livejournal.com profile] elenderel's hubby goes and reads it for me as Dr. Strangelove! I have the coolest friends ever!

Apparently his message of bat-shit nuttery has won over the coveted neo-Nazi endorsement, so I guess that's something. The saddest thing is that while I was out running errands on Sunday I noticed that someone had stuck a Ron Paul for president sign up on the divider of San Antonio. Yes, somewhere not too far from where I live is a person who thinks Ron Paul should be running this country. I may not sleep for a week...

My mind automatically transliterates "Ron Paul" to "RuPaul." Maybe it's a psychic defense mechanism.

Hey, we'd then have the President and First Lady in one body. Wouldn't that be cool?

Well, he's really *not* a serious candidate, except in the eyes of himself and his Web following, which is quite fanatical.

I'm puzzled, too.

If you click on the first link in my post then read the comments section you get a fantastic example of just how nutty his following is. Of course given the level of bat-shit the candidate exhibits one supposes those who want him to rule the nation would need that and then some.

Sorry, sorry, if he starts making some serious headway on the big boys I promise to shut up about him.

Actually I'm kind of relieved that none of his 'bots showed up to tell me what a big poopy-head I am for talkin' bad about their boy Ron. And even more relieved that no one on my friends list piped up with a "Hey, waitta' minute..." I think that would've made me cry.

I suspect that at this point, he's so far to the right of the curve that he sees the fascist-industrial complex (the super-free-traders) as the "world's elites", not the liberal intelligentsia (which he'd call the UN elites). That's the point at which a right-wing nutjob begins to resemble the left-wing nutjobs at the other end - the political spectrum isn't a line, it's a circle. ;-)

Mmm, I'd agree to a point but I can't quite see StormFront backing an ultra-left whackjob any time soon. Ultra-right, sure, that's their cuppa', but ultra-left...nope, not seeing it.

There you go again, imagining these people are reasonable and behaviorally consistent. You gotta let that go. ;-)
