First a great big "Happy Birthday!" to tersa, moonlightnrain and I have a gifty for you and I'm wondering what's up with your plans for this year. I remember you mentioning you'd like to see a show but I don't recall any firm plans being made. Perhaps I am out of the loop.

Otherwise lovely weekend with lots of puttering in the garden which is, in a word, lush. I have achieved a somewhat "Pokemon" outlook when it comes to the acquisition of mint varieties. I want them all, and damn tersa's eyes for spotting a variety called Apple Mint that I do not have. The seller only had it in a big planter with a bunch of other mints I already own for this week, but promised to have individual ones next week. It will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine.

Got to see "Hot Fuzz" this weekend which was, well, just ok really. I'd heard glowing reviews and I got my hopes up a little too high I think. If I had to choose between it and "Shaun of the Dead" the latter would win every time. Maybe it's just that they basically did a brilliant action movie parody episode of "Spaced" that I found way funnier and more creative, or just that I hadn't seen "Point Break" and "Bad Boyz II". But the other problem I had was that they'd tell you about a joke verbally, then show you the video reference to the joke, then actually enact the joke, by which point I was kind of like, "Yeah, ok, got it." The very end was quite funny, but again it didn't have me howling like "Spaced" or "Shaun of the Dead" so I left more than a little disappointed.

Then elo_sf sent me the latest Dr. Who episode which I pretty much just skimmed through. I'm not sure how a writer can possibly screw up a Dalek episode, but this one managed it. I believe from now on when I want to refer to a really dumb quasi-scientific sounding word it will no longer be "midichlorians" (thanks again for that one, George), rather "dalekanium". Seriously, WTF?

I'm not sure which moment exactly was the most embarrassing to watch, there were so many to choose from. What saddens me is that the show used to be about low production value but damned good writing to make up for it. I'd much rather have good writing with styrofoam sets and visible wires than half-assed writing and the best CGI money can buy.

It's not helping that Martha is still Rose v. 2, and Rose Lite at that, half the personality and acting ability. If the creative team behind the series is actively trying to kill off any and all fan interest, well they're doing a damn fine job of it, that's all I can say. I'm sticking around for one reason and one reason only at this point, the Master.

On a happier note I'm currently working on a mix for my epic length HP/DF fanfic and it is just brilliant if I do say so myself. Of course it's hard to put together a bad mix when it's for a ghost story, there are just way too many great songs out there dealing with death and grief. And finally having an excuse to use Sinead O'Connor's "I am Stretched on Your Grave" has made me downright giddy. It's kind of embarrassing really.

Have to disagree on Hot Fuzz. Their were times in Shaun of the Dead where I was neither scared, nor laughing, just bored and waiting for them to get to the point. In HF, I never felt bored.

And I hear tell there's such a thing as ginger mint.... ;)

And you are not out of the loop. There has been no firm plans for my birthday this year. I'm still pondering firming things up with the Great Puppet Show but I think I'm going to wait until after Round 2 to pick a weekend in May which will work with my schedule. :}

This week is busy, but I'm free on Friday evening and possibly Sunday. :)

We will have to agree to disagree. Perhaps it's simply that I got the parody references in SotD more easily than in HF, or just that they didn't seem to be beating me over the head with them in the former.

Yeah well if you see it around here anywhere let me know, I have not yet reached the stage where I'm willing to order from faraway locales just to increase my mint collection.

But I was more forgiving with Sylvester McCoy in great part because I adored him and Ace. Give me a good companion and I'm willing to overlook a lot. But this episode was just...sad.
